( ENSPIRE News ) An Unexpected Twist This Week, the Iconic John Witherspoon Passes Away at Age 77

Many fans knew him as “Pops” or felt like he was the father or family that they could relate to. John “Pops” Witherspoon was an American actor and comedian who performed in dozens of television shows and films. He gave the world many lessons in his comedy sketches, as well as played in shows or movies that needed his comedy relief. He played in The Wayans Bros, Friday Series, The Tracy Morgan Show, and did the voice over for Grandpa in the Boondocks series.

His family released this statement.

It is with deepest sorrow that we can confirm our beloved husband and father, John Witherspoon, one of the hardest working men in show business, died today at his home in Sherman Oaks at the age of 77. He is survived by his wife Angela, and his sons JD, Alexander, and a large family. We are all in shock, please give us a minute for a moment in privacy and we will celebrate his life and his work together. John used to say ‘I’m no big deal’, but he was a huge deal to us.

Witherspoon showed kindness, discipline, and gratitude for all the roles that he had played. He wanted all of his roles to have meaning and be relatable. He put himself into each of his characters and the world loved it. He had a unique way of taking a devasting scene or message and using his personality to add humor to it. He was great at giving the audience something to laugh and laughter is what the world will always remember him for. He was the grandpa and father that a lot of people had or wished they had. Even before he is put to rest remember he was the comedian that was so good that it made you want to smack your mother.

Our condolences to John Witherspoon’s family and friend. He will truly be missed but never forgotten!
