Renowned filmmaker Ryan Coogler will be recognized this fall at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s (LACMA) Art+Film Gala. The event, now in its 14th year, will take place on November 1 and honor Coogler along with celebrated artist Mary Corse. Co-chaired by LACMA trustee Eva Chow and actor Leonardo DiCaprio, the gala has become one of Los Angeles’ premier cultural evenings, blending the worlds of film and fine art.

The honor comes during a pivotal moment for LACMA, as the 2025 gala will be the last before the museum opens its new building designed by Peter Zumthor. Known for spotlighting influential voices in both art and cinema, the event has previously celebrated creators such as Baz Luhrmann and Simone Leigh. Last year’s gala raised $6.4 million in support of LACMA’s exhibitions, film programs, acquisitions, and educational initiatives—underscoring its significance not only as a glamorous gathering but also as a vital fundraising effort.

Ryan Coogler has left an indelible mark on Hollywood with films like Fruitvale Station, Creed, and the record-breaking Black Panther. His most recent release, the vampire-horror thriller Sinners, premiered in April and has already earned more than $365 million worldwide. Through his work, Coogler has become known for expanding representation in cinema and telling stories that resonate across cultural lines. LACMA Director Michael Govan praised him for his transformative impact, noting how his films reframe history and open new worlds of possibility.

Mary Corse, who will be honored alongside Coogler, is a pioneering figure of Southern California’s Light and Space movement. Her celebrated “White Light” paintings use glass microspheres to reflect and shift light, challenging viewers’ perceptions of color and form. Govan highlighted how both Corse and Coogler push the boundaries of their respective mediums in innovative ways.

The evening, supported once again by Gucci as its presenting sponsor, is expected to draw a star-studded guest list of artists, actors, and cultural leaders. As Los Angeles prepares for the next chapter of LACMA’s history, the gala will not only celebrate artistic achievement but also spotlight the power of film and art to shape cultural dialogue.
