SUMMARY:Superfine: Tailoring Black Style Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Costume Institute’s spring 2025 exhibition presents a cultural and historical examination of Black style over three hundred years through the concept of dandyism. In the 18th-century Atlantic world\, a new culture of consumption\, fueled by the slave trade\, colonialism\, and imperialism\, enabled access to clothing and goods that indicated wealth\, distinction\, and taste. Black dandyism sprung from the intersection of African and European style traditions. \nSuperfine: Tailoring Black Style explores the importance of style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora\, particularly in the United States and Europe. Through a presentation of garments and accessories\, paintings\, photographs\, decorative arts\, and more\, from the 18th century to today\, the exhibition interprets the concept of dandyism as both an aesthetic and a strategy that allowed for new social and political possibilities. Superfine is organized into 12 sections\, each representing a characteristic that defines the style\, such as Champion\, Respectability\, Heritage\, Beauty\, and Cosmopolitanism. Together\, these characteristics demonstrate how one’s self-presentation is a mode of distinction and resistance—within a society impacted by race\, gender\, class\, and sexuality. \n#SuperfineStyle \nThe exhibition is made possible by \n\n\n\nMajor funding is provided by Instagram\, the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation\, Africa Fashion International\, founded by Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe\, and The Perry Foundation. \n\n\n\nThe Met Fifth Avenue\n\n\n1000 Fifth Avenue\nNew York\, NY 10028\nPhone: 212-535-7710\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Met Cloisters\n\n\n99 Margaret Corbin Drive\nFort Tryon Park\nNew York\, NY 10040\nPhone: 212-923-3700\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Detroit is Different Community Group Announces Return of the 3rd Annual Collard Green Cook-Off
DESCRIPTION:Detroit is Different Community Group announces the return of the 3rd Annual Collard Green Cook-Off\, a soul-filled celebration of Black culinary heritage\, taking place Saturday\, July 26\, 2025 from 2 – 6 p.m. at Chandler Park located at 12831 Frankfort St in Detroit. \nThis year’s theme\, “Bridging Detroit through Culture and Cuisine\,” highlights the city’s legacy of urban farming and soul food appreciation. The event unites chefs\, growers\, elders\, and youth in a one-of-a-kind experience. \n“This isn’t just about food\,” says Khary Frazier\, Founder\, Detroit is Different. “This is about honoring legacy\, building community\, and reclaiming joy. Collard greens connect generations\, neighborhoods\, and histories. Through this event\, we’re using food as a bridge.” \nWe are thrilled to bring the rich cultural experience of the Collard Green Cook-Off to the historic Chandler Park on Detroit’s Eastside. This year’s competition features an incredible lineup of Collard Green Chefs\, including Harriette Brown\, Kenyatta Brown\, Josmine Evans\, Lavon Jones\, Ms. Kisha’s Kitchen\, Chef MoeVito\, and Trendy Celebrations. Supporting them are our dedicated Detroit-based Collard Green Growers: Latrina Conaway\, Donald Jones\, Mama Jerry\, Willie Patmon\, and Romondo Woods II. Adding to the excitement\, this year’s judges include Orlando Bailey of Outlier Media\, comedians Howie Bell and Coco\, Ederique Goudia of In the Business of Food\, and Mikiah Glynn of Brix Wine. The title of Collard Green Cook-Off Champion will be determined by a 50/50 vote split between the audience and our panel of judges\, making community engagement central to the celebration. \nOver 400 pounds of greens are sourced from five to seven Black urban growers\, each paid $5 per pound. “Supporting Black farmers is crucial\,” says Frazier. “We’re building wealth and visibility for the people growing our food right here in Detroit. It’s an economy of care and culture.” \nThe Cook-Off is a true intergenerational gathering. “Elders bring the soul food wisdom. Young chefs bring innovation. Together\, they keep culture alive\,” Frazier emphasizes. “This is how we pass on legacy—through flavor\, memory\, and love.” \nBacked by sponsors including Chandler Park Conservancy\, Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund\, Neighborhood Vitality Index\, SMART Transit. The Collard Green Cook-Off drawn 3\,500+ attendees to date. \nFor more details follow @detroitisdifferent on Instagram and Facebook or visit www.detroitisdifferent.com.
