( ENSPIRE Music ) AdELA’s Book Series “Hunny & Koko” Characters Appear In “Chase The Happy”
AdELA is a South African, award-winning artist making a change with her recently released animated album for children, “Chase The Happy.” A former school teacher, AdELA brought together a group of Grammy Award-winning musicians, renowned producers, songwriters, and vocalists to create a storytelling project for children of all ages to love. The album has educational benefits, such as social emotional learning (SEL) principles that can impact young listeners. A fusion of jazz, pop, rap, and rock songs brings together canine characters from her acclaimed children’s book series “Hunny & Koko.” Those who were involved in this music project included TV star Mehgan James, music sync sensation and Hunny & Koko creator AdELA, Grammy-nominated Clemm Rishad, Ink Star Dre Gilly, Billboard-charting songwriter Alonda Rich, and producer/composer Ms Madli, to name a few.
AdELA is a creative force that has shared with us how her experiences in the classroom about SEL principles were added in the “Chase The Happy” album and its impact. In addition, she explains the project’s genesis and how the diverse team contributed to the musical elements of the characters from her book series “Hunny & Koko.” Furthermore, she delves into her collaboration with Save The Music Foundation and how its SEL lessons inspired this movement, not just with her album but also how it helps educate families and teachers.

Could you elaborate on how your classroom experiences informed the social-emotional learning (SEL) principles incorporated into the “Chase The Happy” album and what impact you hope it will have on young listeners?
No two days in a classroom are ever the same, as any teacher will tell you. With a mix of personalities, emotions, and energy all in one space, it’s essential to equip kids with the tools they need to navigate their feelings. When we created this album, our goal wasn’t just to make music that makes you move—we wanted to share a meaningful message.
As any adult knows, half the battle is identifying how you feel. Once kids can do that, they’re on their way to healthier habits and happier days. And what better way to share that journey than through music?
Can you share more about the genesis of this project and how this diverse team, including the fusion of jazz, pop, rap, and rock, contributed to musically bringing the canine characters from your “Hunny & Koko” series to life?
As a singer, rapper, and songwriter, I never imagined I’d become a children’s book author. But my journey took an unexpected turn thanks to my dog, Hunny. As Hunny grew older, I felt a deep need to create something lasting—a legacy for her and her sister, Koko. I wanted to share the joy they brought into my life with others, so I began writing books inspired by “true-ish” stories from my perspective of their friendship.
Six months later, Hunny passed away at the age of 14, leaving me heartbroken. Returning to the studio felt impossible, so I channeled my grief into writing and storytelling. This led to the creation of Whisker Woods, a magical neighborhood where Hunny, Koko, and their little sister Penny live alongside a cast of quirky animal friends. Each character has their own personality, story, and heart, forming a world full of love, laughter, and friendship
As Whisker Woods came to life, I realized it needed a soundtrack—music that reflected the emotions, adventures, and diversity of its 12 unique characters. This sparked “Chase the Happy.” I collaborated with an award-winning, talented group of friends to bring to life a musical adventure for kids. The ‘Chase The Happy’ album is more than music; it’s a celebration of the characters in Whisker Woods, ensuring there’s a song for everyone.
Your partnership with Save The Music Foundation to provide SEL lessons alongside the “Chase The Happy” album highlights its mission. What inspired this movement, and how do you envision families and educators using this album to foster these principles in young children?
As a mental health advocate in the music industry, my passion stems from my own journey with mental health. When we created this album, we knew it had to be more than just music. We wanted it to be a tool, a resource for parents, teachers, and caregivers to help kids learn how to identify and navigate their emotions.
As a former teacher, creating lesson plans and emotional literacy activities came naturally to me—like riding a bike. It felt familiar, purposeful, and deeply important. This was something I could offer that could truly make a difference in a child’s life.
Partnering with the Save The Music Foundation was a full-circle moment for me. I’ve always admired their commitment to ensuring music and the arts remain a part of every child’s education. Collaborating with them on a project that connects music, emotional health, and education validated everything I’ve poured into this album. It’s not just about songs—it’s about impact.
What are your aspirations for your storytelling projects, and what message do you hope to impart to children and adults through your creative future endeavors?
The Hunny & Koko book series was born out of my love and friendship with my dogs. It’s a little bit silly, and there’s humor, but most importantly, there is a message of love, kindness, and friendship in every book. I hope to reach as many children as I can—and if I don’t, that’s okay too. If one kid picks up a Hunny & Koko book and finds joy in it, I feel like I’ve accomplished my mission.

AdELA partnered with various educational entities, including Save The Music Foundation, to provide SEL lessons for K-2nd graders. AdELA states, “Chase The Happy” is more than an album – it’s a movement.
