Tell us about yourself.
I am a recording artist from Germany. Although I was living the life over there (earning a lot of money as a singer and living in a beautiful house), I felt there has to be more to life and I had to find myself as an artist and as a person. So I packed my stuff and came to New York in March this year without having a plan. It was soooo cold outside and I was living in a crappy apartment in harlem. I felt that the only thing left to do was to buy a guitar and start to write songs and figure out how to produce my own tracks. So here I am months later, happy that I came here and ready to show the world my songs.
Being an international artist and biracial, have you faced any adversities and/or advantages growing up and pursuing your passion?
Yes I have. I was told daily that I was a n***a, couldn’t sing, not worth anything and I should kill myself. It took years to get these words out of my head. It took all the strength I had to make myself believe that what he said wasn’t true. Still to this very day I am sensitive about the N-Word and I can’t understand why a lot of African American people (even artists) call each other n****. Don’t they understand how deep and negative the history of this word is??
What type of impact are you looking to make in the industry?
I want to be the perfect blend between pop and soul and reach as many people I can with the messages in my songs. I want to make the people not only listen to my songs, but also to think about their life, who they are and what they’ve experienced in life. Some of us are not really living anymore. We cover up our true self and our past with our smart phones, the social media, selfies, TV and Reality Shows and totaly forget what our real life is about. Life is too short to not fully live it and experience it.
You have a Masters degree in Musicology. Clearly you have a love of music, give us an insight at why you pursued this degree?
Honestly at first I had regrets about it. Spending five years of my life at the university, studying the boring theories of classical music. But now I am so thankful for the degree, because first it taught me to be disciplined, studying in the library for hours and months. Second it gives my music a european touch, and third it added a quality and structure to my songwriting.
What do you feel your music does to your fans?
It touches them to their very core, it makes them think about their covered up pain, it motivates them and gives them hope. My music is deep and soothing. I write about topics that not too many artist write about today, since most songs are about love, sex, heartbreak and partying.
What has been the greatest obstacle you have faced and how did you overcome it?
I had to stay in my room for years, wasn’t allowed to go outside and play, I was only allowed to go to school. Every night my mom’s boyfriend came into my room and told me to kill myself, that my life doesn’t matter, that nobody loves me. I was on the edge of committing suicide. For years it held me back of believing in myself and being the artist that I am today. I was fighting with myself, feeling small, and then wanting to change the world and do and be something great.
What is one thing your fans do not know about you?
I am a chocoholic. I have an unstoppable craving for chocolate and cake with A LOT of icing. That’s my drug when i’m feeling happy or sad.
Your upcoming album “Revelations” is set to come out soon. Tell us what to expect on this album. The inspiration behind it and who you worked with.
You can expect strong and conscious songs put in musical mixture of pop-soul-alternative. The inspiration behind it came from when I cancelled all my shows in Germany and came to New York this year. For the first time in my life I had time to think, to observe and to live in the moment. And I was all by myself, had to face my emotions and all the pain of the past that I had desperately try to cover up but now came haunting me. So i decided to write about it in the most honest and most beautiful way to not only heal me, but heal others who have the same feelings, somewhere deep down inside of them.
Where do you see yourself in the next 3 to 5 years?
Filling stadiums, putting smiles and tears on the faces of my audience and live in a beautiful house on the beach, where the sun can wake me up every morning.
