( ENSPIRE Interview ) This 23-Year-Old “Silky-Voiced Rising Jazz Star” Shares Her Wonderful Journey
Jazz singer and she is from the Bronx! That is all it took for me to want to know more about and support Samara Joy. There is just something about someone from your city or town that is living their dream that invokes immediate support and excitement. Let’s not forget to mention she has the talent to back it up! Samara has gotten the attention and praise from celebrities including Regina King, Lakeith Stanfield, Angela Bassett, and Don Cheadle to name a few, and has over 1.7M followers on TikTok following her musical journey – Samara is perhaps the first Gen Z jazz singing star.
Born and raised in the “Boogie Down Bronx,” music has always been a guiding presence within Samara’s family. Her grandparents, Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon, led the well-known Philadelphia-based gospel group, The Savettes, and her father toured with the renowned Andrae Crouch. Samara took home the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition prize while earning her degree from SUNY Purchase’s jazz studies program and eventually graduated as the Ella Fitzgerald Scholar. Now, less than two months after the release of her Verve Records debut, Samara has added a new credential to her impressive resume: 2x Grammy nominee.
