Sharie Wilson and Tonya Thompson are entrepreneurs, healthy hair experts, hair stylists, co-founders of Mixed Institute of Cosmetology & Barber, and the founders of the DreamGirls Salon.
Through their hard work and dedication, they have claimed their space in the beauty world as their business continues to grow and bloom across America. Their success has led them to own two locations! Wilson currently operates the DreamGirls salon in Sacramento and Thompson operates the salon in Los Angeles.
As the founders of DreamGirls salon and hair care brand, their mission is to create beauty and cosmetic products for people of color. They’ve made their passion to help black women’s and men’s hair reach its greatest potential in both strength and length through the Healthy Hair Program and 5-Step Healthy Hair Care System product line, which has sold over $1M worth of products. The positive impact they’ve had on others has continued to push and motivate these two successful entrepreneurs.
They recently spoke to ENSPIRE about their experiences in the business and in the beauty industry.
What was the hardest part of your journey and how did you guys overcome it?
In a highly saturated and competitive market, it can be challenging to stand out and gain credibility, especially as a new and smaller brand compared to larger beauty companies. To overcome this challenge, we focused on transparency, authenticity, and delivering high-quality products that actually deliver results. We made sure to provide detailed information about our ingredients, and the science behind our products. We also showcased the experiences and testimonials of satisfied customers to build trust. Additionally, we actively engaged with our customers through social media, email marketing, and other communication channels to foster a sense of community and connection. We listened to their feedback, addressed their concerns, and continuously improved our products and services based on their needs. Building strong relationships with influencers and industry experts also helped increase our brand visibility and credibility. Collaborations and partnerships with trusted personalities in the beauty industry helped us reach a wider audience and establish a positive reputation.
What is the most rewarding part of your job and why?
The most rewarding part of our job is being able to make a positive impact on people’s lives. Whether it’s helping them achieve their hair goals, boosting their self-confidence, or simply enhancing their natural beauty, knowing that our work can contribute to their happiness and well-being is incredibly fulfilling. Additionally, being part of the ever-evolving beauty industry and the constant innovation that comes with it keeps us motivated and inspired to continue pushing boundaries and creating the best products and experiences for my clients.
What inspires you to continue working in the beauty and cosmetics industry?
Overall, what inspires us to continue working in the beauty industry is the ability to make a positive impact on people’s lives, whether it’s helping them achieve their hair goals or boosting their self-confidence. Many of our clients believed that they couldn’t grow their hair and have been fed for most of their lives that Black women can’t have long healthy hair. We started our brand with a mission to debunk the myth that Black Women can’t grow their hair and we have proven that through the success we’ve seen from our customers. Seeing the transformation and joy that our work and products bring to individuals is incredibly rewarding and serves as a constant reminder of why we remain passionate about what we do after all these years.
What is something you want people to know about your business and products and why?
Our expertise and real-life experience have allowed us to create effective solutions for hair problems that are commonly experienced in salons. Our Healthy Hair Care System line along with our curl and styling products are specifically designed to address growth issues, thinning hair, breakage, and other common hair concerns. We have spent years researching and developing these products, making sure they are of the highest quality and truly deliver results.
Unlike other brands, we are not just a face behind our products. We are hairstylists with over 20+ years of experience, who work with clients and their hair on a daily basis. This hands-on experience gives us a unique understanding of what our clients need to achieve their desired hair growth. We have worked closely with our lab to develop products that are not only effective but also safe for use. Our products have been thoroughly tested and are backed by our expertise as professional hairstylists.

What advice would you give to someone trying to break into the beauty industry?
The most important advice for someone trying to break into the beauty industry is to take action and like Nike says, JUST DO IT. Many people feel overwhelmed or unsure of how to bring their vision to life, but if you have genuine passion for your beauty business, everything will fall into place when you take the first step. Create a vision board to outline your goals and aspirations for yourself and your business, and then dive into determining your target audience and the reasons behind your product or service. We, too, started small, selling hair extensions out of our cars with only one salon station. However, we now own a multi-million dollar business with a team of stylists across two salon locations. It wasn’t an instant success, but if you truly believe in your brand, you will find a way to succeed.
