The 62nd New York Film Festival kicked off in grand style with the opening night premiere of RaMell Ross’s “Nickel Boys,” a searing drama based on Colson Whitehead‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The film, a harrowing yet hopeful tale of resilience, will hit theaters December 13 in NYC and December 20 in LA. Elwood Curtis (Ethan Herisse) dreams of college, but his world crumbles when he’s sent to Nickel Academy, a brutal reform school. There, he finds a friend in Turner (Brandon Wilson), and together, they fight to survive the horrors of Nickel.

The film boasts a stellar cast, including breakout stars Ethan Herisse and Brandon Wilson as Elwood and Turner, respectively. Joining them are seasoned actors Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Daveed Diggs, Hamish Linklater, and Fred Hechinger. These stars graced the red carpet of the New York Film Festival premiere alongside director RaMell Ross (making his narrative feature debut), writer/producer Joslyn Barnes, and cinematographer Jomo Fray.

“Nickel Boys” delves into a dark chapter in American history, exposing the systemic racism and cruelty that plagued the Jim Crow South. The film doesn’t shy away from depicting the brutal realities of reform schools, but it also shines a light on the enduring human spirit. Elwood and Turner’s fight for survival and unwavering bond offer a powerful message of hope in the face of oppression.

With its strong themes, great acting, and skilled direction, “Nickel Boys” will likely be a big hit this awards season. For a sneak peek of the film, look for the official trailer, which is available on YouTube. Get ready to be moved by a story that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
