( ENSPIRE Feature ) Here’s How to Set Achievable Resolutions
The new year is a time for fresh starts and new beginnings. It’s a time to reflect on the past year and set goals for the future. Many people make New Year’s resolutions, but few of them stick. Staying consistent can be difficult, but if you know yourself and how you want to see yourself, you can make it happen. Nothing good change comes easily; remember that.
I wanted to share some tools and thought processes I am using to keep myself accountable for the positive changes I want to make this year. If you want to make lasting changes, here are five resolutions you can achieve.
- Set realistic goals.
One of the most common reasons people fail to stick to their resolutions is that they set unrealistic goals. If you’re trying to lose 50 pounds in a month, you’re setting yourself up for failure. Instead, set small, achievable goals that you can realistically reach.
I have committed myself to working out at least 3 times a week because I have already been going to the gym. I am improving on something I have already been doing: being realistic.
- Make a plan.
Once you’ve set your goals, make a plan for how you’re going to achieve them. This could involve breaking down your goals into smaller steps, setting deadlines, and finding a support system.
I like to write things down and categorize them. I created a plan for several areas of my life, such as physical, spiritual, financial, professional, and educational. For each of those, I wrote three things I wanted to achieve in each area and broke it down in quarters for a time frame.
- Track your progress.
It’s essential to track your progress as you work towards your goals. This will help you stay motivated and on track. You can track your progress in a journal, on a calendar, or with a fitness tracker.
I added journal writing to my daily routine, which will help me track my progress. I have never done this, and I am excited to track and reflect on my progress as that will motivate and give me pride at the same time.
- Reward yourself.
When you reach a goal, be sure to reward yourself. This will help you stay motivated and keep working towards your goals.
One thing I am going to do is reward myself. I look forward to rewarding myself and encouraging me to achieve my goals. I look at it like a happiness time two. I am happy I set a goal and achieved it, and who does not love to reward themself? That is also part of my self-care: congratulating myself because I deserve to.
- Don’t give up.
It’s important to remember that it takes time to change your habits. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results immediately. Just keep working hard, and you will eventually reach your goals.
I am learning how patient you have to be with yourself. Allow yourself grace to go through these positive changes you want in yourself. Knowing that you put in the work and appreciating the results does something for your heart and soul. It will make you not want to give up on yourself.
We should all remember that the first step to a better self is to think about it and then put it into action. There are not many people at that point. So be proud that you see and want better for yourself. That is when life truly gets better. Cheers to a year of accomplishing your goals!
