( ENSPIRE Entertainment ) Animated Series Premieres on April 5th, Showcasing Rich Culture and Diverse Storytelling
As a Nigerian born and raised in the Bronx, let me tell you, this news hits differently. Cartoon Network and Max have announced the premiere date for their highly anticipated animated series, “Iyanu: Child of Wonder,” it feels like a moment I’ve been waiting for my whole life. This groundbreaking series, featuring an all-star Nigerian voice cast, celebrates West African culture in a way I’ve never seen on screen. It’s based on the popular graphic novel series from YouNeek Studios and Dark Horse Comics, and honestly, it’s about time.
Growing up in the Bronx, my connection to my Nigerian heritage was so important as I got older, but seeing that reflected in mainstream media? Almost nonexistent. “Iyanu” changes that narrative entirely. Created by Roye Okupe, who also serves as an executive producer, “Iyanu” follows the adventures of a young girl with magical abilities as she embarks on self-discovery and adventure. The show is helmed by Roye Okupe, who was born and raised in Nigeria and now serves as Creator, Executive Producer, and Showrunner. Lion Forge Entertainment, a leading Black-owned animation studio in North America, produces the series. The series showcases stunning animation, rich storytelling, and a vibrant portrayal of Nigerian mythology and folklore.

This representation matters. It shapes how we see ourselves and how the world sees us. It sends a message that our stories, culture, and magic are worthy of being told and celebrated globally. It’s a chance for kids—especially Black kids and Nigerian kids—to see themselves as heroes, as magical beings, and as part of a rich and powerful history.

Here’s what you need to know:
- Premiere Date: “Iyanu” will premiere on Cartoon Network on Saturday, April 5, at 9:30 AM ET/PT.

“Iyanu” is a significant milestone for animation. It showcases the power of diverse storytelling and brings West African culture to a global audience.
