What role do you believe the entertainment industry can play in raising awareness and promoting positive change in mental health and gun violence?

The film and music industry significantly influences the mental health of our youth, contributing to issues such as gun violence and the impact of video games. Many individuals struggle to distinguish between entertainment and reality, leading them to replicate what they see or hear in their daily lives. This can result in dangerous situations where individuals harm others or put themselves in peril. As a director and influencer, I use storytelling to bring these issues to light and encourage meaningful dialogue. By creating authentic narratives that delve into the complexities of mental health and its connection to societal problems like gun violence, I aim to inspire awareness and accountability within the entertainment and music industries. The streets are unforgiving; approaching them with the wrong mindset can have fatal consequences.

I see it as my responsibility to craft entertaining and educating content, challenge harmful behaviors, and present alternatives. Additionally, social media poses risks, as individuals often feel emboldened to express themselves without understanding the potential repercussions or the identities of those they are addressing. This disconnect can also lead to dangerous outcomes. I hope to bridge that disconnect through my platform, using my influence to foster understanding and empathy. Mental health challenges are prevalent in these environments, and by leveraging the reach of film and music, we can encourage industries to amplify positive, impactful messages that empower individuals to make better choices for themselves and their communities.

“Put the Guns Down: A World Epidemic” has garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards. What inspired you to create this film, and how do you hope it will impact audiences and drive social change?

I have become increasingly weary of the tragic news regarding young lives taken in communities like South Central Los Angeles. It has compelled me to take action to save the lives of young people globally. My film, ‘Put the Guns Down: A World Epidemic,’ has already garnered over 46 awards and counting, and I genuinely believe it deserves recognition at the Oscar and Golden Globe levels. As a filmmaker and advocate, my vision for this project goes beyond entertainment—it’s about creating a platform for change. This film is designed to not only educate audiences but also spark critical conversations about gun violence and the mental health challenges that fuel it. Through the medium of film, I aim to reach individuals on an emotional and intellectual level, encouraging them to consider the root causes of this epidemic and take steps toward meaningful solutions. We must rally behind this film and ensure its success, as it is both impactful and educational. As parents, families, and communities, we should wholeheartedly support this initiative and the movement I have launched to save lives worldwide.

This is not just a call to action for viewers but also for the entertainment industry itself. I urge networks and platforms to prioritize content that educates and inspires, and I encourage audiences to demand such films by supporting projects like this. This film marks the beginning of a 12-part series. Each installment will spotlight communities’ challenges across 11 other states, raising awareness about the complex interplay of social, cultural, and systemic issues contributing to violence. My ambition is to bring these stories to life in a way that informs and mobilizes communities to act. By amplifying the voices of those most affected and providing actionable solutions, I hope this series catalyzes a more significant movement that addresses gun violence and fosters resilience and hope in our communities.”

The film addresses the pressing issues of mental health and gun violence. What role can the entertainment industry play in raising awareness and promoting positive change?

The entertainment industry has a unique power to shape perspectives, influence behaviors, and spark meaningful conversations. It must recognize the significance of this film, “Put the Guns Down: A World Epidemic,” and actively support the movement it represents to protect young lives globally. Beyond merely entertaining, the industry is responsible for amplifying projects that address critical issues like mental health and gun violence, and this film is a prime example of such impactful storytelling. Advocating for this film to receive an Oscar and a Golden Globe is not just about accolades but acknowledging its role as a catalyst for change. The recognition of cinema like this elevates the importance of their messages, inspiring broader action and awareness.

Furthermore, the entertainment industry must commit to funding and producing more educational and socially conscious films. Companies, including mine, need consistent support to develop content that empowers rather than harms our youth. By prioritizing projects that promote awareness and provide solutions, the industry can help save lives and create a safer, healthier future for the next generation. My work with this film represents just the beginning of what’s possible. It’s time for the industry to stand behind these efforts, acknowledging the importance of these stories and actively contributing to a movement for lasting, positive change.

How have these partnerships contributed to the success of “Put the Guns Down” and your broader advocacy efforts?

The support and collaboration of the entertainment industry have been instrumental in amplifying the reach and impact of “Put the Guns Down.” The recognition and awards the film has garnered from over 46 film festivals reflect the industry’s acknowledgment of its significance. These accolades validate the film’s message and the power of storytelling as a catalyst for positive social change. This recognition has helped elevate the visibility of the project and underscored the importance of addressing pressing issues like mental health and gun violence through the lens of entertainment. Building on this momentum, we are actively forging partnerships with major universities, high schools, and middle schools worldwide to expand the reach and impact of “Put the Guns Down.” These collaborations represent a natural progression in our mission to address mental health challenges and prevent senseless gun violence. We aim to take the film global, working with educators and community leaders to present it in schools and engage students in critical discussions.

Through these screenings, we aim to foster meaningful conversations about the consequences of gun violence, the importance of making informed choices, and the need to seek support for mental health struggles. These efforts are about more than raising awareness—they’re about creating a global movement to save lives, empower young people, and inspire communities to act. By uniting the entertainment industry’s influence with educational institutions’ reach, we are building a powerful coalition dedicated to addressing these urgent challenges and impacting future generations.

Beyond the film, you’re developing a lecture series for high schools and colleges. What key messages do you hope to convey to young people, and how do you plan to engage them in meaningful conversations about mental health and violence prevention?

“Put the Guns Down: A World Epidemic” is a compelling educational tool that resonates deeply with young audiences. It effectively communicates its message by presenting authentic stories that captivate and inspire reflection. Whenever we share this film with students, I witness its profound impact on their perspectives and understanding. What makes this film so impactful is the authenticity of the individuals featured—parents, family members, and loved ones who have tragically had someone taken from them due to senseless gun violence. Their stories are raw and honest, and we have united for this global initiative to create change. Young people recognize this sincerity, and it fosters a connection that makes them eager to engage in meaningful conversations.

Through the lecture series, I aim to amplify these stories and connect them to actionable messages. I want to empower young people to make informed, responsible decisions, understand the far-reaching consequences of gun violence, and seek support for mental health challenges. The film serves as the foundation for these discussions, but the conversations that follow are where the real engagement happens. By creating a safe and open environment for dialogue, I aim to inspire students to reflect on their own lives, ask questions, and share their perspectives. This isn’t just about raising awareness—it’s about fostering empathy, understanding, and a collective commitment to ending the cycle of violence. Together, through education and honest conversations, we can equip young people with the tools to become advocates for positive change in their communities.

Terry C. Carney, Sr., is more than just a filmmaker; he’s a visionary using his platform to drive meaningful social change. “Put the Guns Down: A World Epidemic” is not merely a film; it’s a call to action. By combining powerful storytelling with a commitment to education and community engagement, Carney inspires a new generation of activists and works towards a future where violence is no longer a part of our shared reality.
