( Community Spotlight ) Initiative Aims to Empower Black Women and Girls Through Education and Access to Contraception

In an empowering move to address health disparities and promote reproductive health awareness, the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), Opill® (the first and only over-the-counter birth control pill in the U.S.), and the Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI) have joined forces to launch the “Level The Court” initiative.

This collaborative effort aims to educate and empower Black women and girls about their reproductive health options, fostering open conversations and providing accessible resources. The initiative recognizes the disproportionate barriers Black women face in accessing reproductive healthcare and seeks to build confidence and health equity within this underserved community.

Key components of “Level The Court” include:

  • Dedicated Webpage: A dedicated webpage on WNBA.com provides first-hand accounts, answers to common reproductive health questions, and information on accessing Opill® at low or no cost.
  • College Tour: Opill® is launching a multi-state college tour to visit 15 HBCUs and other universities to provide interactive and informational events about reproductive health.
  • BWHI Opill® Access Fund: This fund will provide a three-month supply of Opill® to Black women facing temporary challenges in accessing contraception.
  • WNBA on Campus: The WNBA will host events at select campuses, engaging students and promoting the league while raising awareness about reproductive health.

This partnership leverages the WNBA and its players’ influence and platforms to reach a broader audience and encourage Black women to take control of their reproductive health journeys. By providing education, resources, and access to affordable contraception, “Level The Court” aims to create a more equitable healthcare landscape for Black women and girls.
