As federal budget tensions rise, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries visited Bedford Stuyvesant Early Childhood Development Center (BSECDC) on Friday, February 28, to reaffirm the vital role of Head Start programs. With a potential government shutdown threatening services for limited-income families, Jeffries met with staff, parents, and children to hear their stories and explore solutions. This visit was part of Congressman Jeffries’ efforts to understand how to support Head Start programs during a government shutdown, underscoring the urgent need to protect early childhood education initiatives that help Brooklyn’s youngest learners thrive.

During his tour of the 813 Hancock Street location, Congressman Jeffries interacted with the children, explored the newly installed sensory gym, learned about the various programs, and discussed his plans for Head Start programs with BSECDC parents and board members. “Having the opportunity to discuss the potential closing of Head Start programs with Congressman Jeffries was truly eye-opening for me,” said BSECDC parent Veronica White. “He answered my questions about how the community can contribute to keeping Head Start programs, like BSECDC, running during these challenging times. These programs have been invaluable to my family, and we want to ensure they remain a vital part of our community.”

Since January 2025, there have been concerns for a potential government shutdown regarding federally funded programs, which could significantly affect funding, staffing, and overall operations. If such a shutdown occurs, federal funding would cease, forcing many organizations to close until they secure further financial support. It is important to highlight these programs’ positive impact on the community, as they provide quality child care to low-income families. If federal funding is not secured, children may be left without access to essential developmental skills, and parents without quality childcare options while they work. “My top priority is that BSECDC remains open in the event of a government shutdown,” said Executive Director Angela Terry. “Meeting with Congressman Jeffries gave me valuable insights into my next steps, leaving me hopeful that BSECDC can continue supporting Brooklyn’s children.”

Congressman Jeffries encouraged parents and board members to share their experiences with Head Start programs, emphasizing the power of personal stories in advocating for continued federal funding. “At a time when access to high-quality child care is becoming more and more expensive, Head Start continues to play an essential role in the growth and education of our children. I was grateful to visit the Bed-Stuy Early Childhood Development Center and meet the staff members, children, and parents who participate in and benefit from these transformative programs,” said Congressman Hakeem Jeffries.
