Celebrating Music in Our Schools Month (MIOSM) should celebrate music education. Unfortunately, this year, it is about how federal funding is uncertain and how it would damage the effort students and teachers have put into the music program.

Federal funding sources such as Title I, Title II, Title III, Title IV-A, the Assistance for Arts Education (AAE) Program, and Perkins V have provided resources to support arts education. Many of these crucial resources could be at risk of potential changes to education funding. Schools serving low-income communities, English learners, and students pursuing career pathways in the arts are the most at risk. Spreading the word about these changes brings awareness to the issue and gives the public a chance to hear from those affected by these changes.

Many peer-reviewed research studies have shown that music education enhances cognitive development, language skills, social-emotional learning, and overall academic performance. For elementary-age students, music provides a creative outlet, supports literacy and math development, and fosters a sense of belonging. Without finding a group to be a part of, this sense of belonging crucial for young children may not be encouraged. Music is a way to express yourself freely, and for partially introverted students, the music program will give them space to be themselves.

“For many students, including myself as a student, music keeps them engaged in school. We cannot afford to let funding cuts strip away these opportunities, especially for students in underserved communities.” – Bryson Tarbet, founder of That Music Teacher, LLC.
