James Gunn’s Superman hit theaters on July 11, 2025, amid differing expectations and controversy over so-called ‘woke’ themes. Given DC’s recent release history, many expected it to be yet another major disappointment. Thankfully, the film effectively was a reset for the DC film universe and brand.

With an extremely successful opening weekend, the film reignited excitement for Superman and the future of the DC universe. Featuring rising star David Corenswet alongside the talented Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, known for her captivating role in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, the production promises an exciting and fresh take on the beloved characters. Both stars delivered charming performances that stayed true to the comic book, showcasing great chemistry.

Corenswet’s Superman was wholesome and compassionate. He was driven to rescue any life that came within arm’s reach. Moreover, this version of Superman not only exemplifies strength but reflects deep empathy and a heroic resolve to protect those in need. He doesn’t discriminate based on race, nor does he fight for just one country — he stands for himself, making him a truly aspirational figure. Overall, Corenswet’s performance was heartfelt and recognizably Superman, bringing homage to past Supermen such as Christopher Reeve and Tom Welling.

The film adopted a back-to-basics approach, closely paralleling the comics. The vibe, colors, costumes, plot, and atmosphere had retro influences reminiscent of comic book strips. Rachel Brosnahan was undeniably a great choice for Lois Lane and worked perfectly as the character, sharing some of the best scenes with Corenswet. Even Superman’s silly sidekick, Krypto the Superdog, made an appearance. As a result, the movie didn’t take itself too seriously — at one point, Superman even saves a lone squirrel in the middle of a major battle. However, the film handled serious topics like war and politics with the weight they deserved.

Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, leaned into the camp as a power-hungry CEO determined to get his way — no matter the cost. He constantly threw new obstacles in Superman’s path, backed by a team of soldiers. The standout among them was the Engineer, a meta-human with nanotech-based powers, played by María Gabriela de Faría. Unfortunately, the Engineer plays into the stereotype of the angry Latina, often throwing in random Spanish words that feel cringeworthy. This makes her character feel less real and misses the chance to show a more genuine and thoughtful Latina role.

Overall, James Gunn’s Superman is a must-watch. The performances are convincing and capture the heart of the comics with care and style. It offers a fresh take on the classic superhero story, blending action, emotion, and nostalgia with ease. Superman’s inner struggle with identity and responsibility is portrayed in a powerful and relatable way. While the film isn’t without its flaws, its strengths far outweigh them — making it a rewarding experience. In short, the film has the potential to revive DC by reigniting fan excitement, restoring faith in the brand, and setting a stronger foundation for future stories.
