( ENSPIRE Health & Wellness ) Building Your Self-Confidence By Remembering Past Achievements In Order To Succeed

We all struggle with a pesky little thing called self-confidence in our lives. This is because we face peers who appear to be living extraordinary lives (well…at least that’s what they tell us in conversations and on social media). Besides this, we quickly get discouraged when we face failure after failure, and our self-confidence slowly declines. As disappointing as it is, setbacks are an inevitable part of life that can happen more than once. But don’t worry, there is good news. We have control over how we respond to it.

There are many ways to keep our self-confidence levels up, with one of them being the act of listing past achievements. How does this tactic help, you may ask? Well, if you think about it, the answer is quite simple. When we face setbacks, negative thoughts try to bang the door down. We doubt our capabilities because these thoughts tell us, “You’re not good enough,” “You chose the wrong route,” “Throw the towel in now. It’s over.” A negative thought’s goal is to destroy self-confidence by making you forget about past accomplishments. We can’t allow negativity (whether it’s our own thoughts or from others talking smack) to destroy our self-confidence.

Negativity can only have control if we permit it to do so. So take advantage of whatever time you have to list any achievements you gained, no matter how big or small. Just write down anything and everything that comes to mind to help your self-confidence. Also, remember that you can make a list however long or short you want. There’s no set limit for something like this. Once you complete your list, you want to post it somewhere where you’ll look every day (like your bathroom mirror). This will help you remind yourself of what you’ve already done to stay motivated.

Some people shy away from posting lists, fearing that it’ll appear as bragging. But trust me, that’s far from the case. Many of us work better with visual reminders rather than mentally remembering achievements. For example, when I faced setbacks and struggled with self-confidence, I mentally thought about past achievements to lift my spirits. But now that I think about it, I probably should create a physical list (especially when attacked by negative comments from others).

Maintaining our self-confidence is the key to being successful in life. Don’t believe the lies that say you have accomplished no goals. Don’t believe the lies that say everyone declining you is correct. In life, we’re going to hear a lot of “No’s” until someone grants us that “Yes” we’re looking for. As we reflect on our journey, we’ll see that it was worth it because it strengthened us. Know that you’re stronger than you think, and keep pushing!
