Tennessee State University’s New Direction Gospel Choir made history with a powerful performance at the 40th Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards, held August 16 at Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Recognized as Emerging Artists, the choir captivated the audience with their rendition of “I’m Saved” by Dexter Walker & Zion Movement, delivering a mix of traditional gospel energy and heartfelt worship.
The night was especially meaningful for students who described the experience as a dream come true. Jace Lightfoot, from Illinois, reflected on the moment as “amazing” and explained that she simply wanted God to work through her during the performance. Serenity Bond, from Memphis, shared that the recognition highlighted opportunities for other HBCUs, while also noting how being a part of New Direction strengthened her personal faith. Biology major Myles Witcher, from Arkansas, emphasized that the choir was not just performing but ministering, encouraging future TSU students to remain true to themselves and their calling.

The performance reflected the vision of choir director Justin Butler, who has guided New Direction with passion and purpose. Butler praised the students for their discipline and dedication, noting that their Stellar Awards debut represented not only their talent but also their mission to spread joy and inspiration through music.
The opportunity came on the heels of another milestone earlier in 2025, when New Direction secured $11,000 in prize money at the How Sweet the Sound national gospel choir competition, including a People’s Choice Award.

The Stellar Awards, celebrating 40 years of honoring excellence in gospel music, provided the perfect platform for TSU to showcase its talent and highlight the impact of HBCU choirs on the national stage. The performance aired nationally on the Stellar Network on August 30 and on BET on August 31, allowing audiences across the country to share in the choir’s shining moment.
With their passion, perseverance, and powerful voices, Tennessee State University’s New Direction Gospel Choir not only represented their university with pride but also uplifted the gospel community with a performance that will be remembered for years to come.
