( ENSPIRE Entertainment ) Cast and Creators Discuss Bringing the World of Orïsha to the Big Screen
One of the most anticipated fantasy films of 2027 officially introduced audiences to the world of Orïsha during a special trailer launch event held Monday night at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City. Hosted by Paramount Pictures, the event celebrated the debut of the first official trailer for Children of Blood and Bone, the live-action adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel. Following the screening, attendees were treated to a live conversation moderated by Lena Waithe featuring director and co-screenwriter Gina Prince-Bythewood alongside cast members Thuso Mbedu, Tosin Cole, Lashana Lynch, Zackary Momoh, and Academy Award winner Regina King.
For fans who have followed the novel’s journey to the screen, the evening marked more than the release of a trailer, it was a celebration of years of anticipation finally coming to life. The film, which Gina Prince-Bythewood directed, transports audiences to the fictional kingdom of Orïsha. Zélie embarks on a dangerous mission there to restore magic after her people violently lost it. Alongside her brother Tzain and unlikely allies within the royal family, she challenges a kingdom built on fear, oppression, and the suppression of power.
The film features one of the most impressive ensembles in recent years, including Thuso Mbedu, Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, Tosin Cole, Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, Idris Elba and Viola Davis. Throughout the evening’s discussion, the cast reflected on the emotional journey of bringing the beloved story to life. According to reports from the event, conversations centered on the film’s themes of courage, identity, family, and legacy, while also highlighting the cultural authenticity of the production and the significance of creating a fantasy world rooted in African traditions.
Director Gina Prince-Bythewood has previously shared that authenticity was central to the filmmaking process, with production taking place in South Africa and the Canary Islands rather than relying primarily on studio environments. The goal, she explained, was to build a world audience who could fully immerse themselves in it while honoring the spirit of Tomi Adeyemi’s vision.
