ENSPIRE Contributor: Daniel Garritson
Shucked is a new musical comedy that proves sometimes tearing down a few walls, rather than growing them, is the only way to preserve our way of life. Shucked is turning Broadway on its ear and offering a kernel of hope for our divided nation. The play takes place in Cobb County, an agricultural community known for growing corn, though a recent blight has hit the crops and the play’s characters are seeking a way to save their businesses. The audacious farm-to-fable musical is a combination of New York comedy writer Robert Horn and Nashville musicians Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally.
On Tuesday night, May 22nd, Tony Award nominee Alex Newell brought the judges and studio audience of NBC’s “The Voice” to their feet when they sang their show-stopping number “Independently Owned” from the hit new Broadway musical Shucked, nominated for nine Tony Awards including Best Musical. Besides their Tony Award nomination, Newell has won the Outer Critics Circle Award and a Clarence Derwent Award and has been nominated for Drama Desk and Drama League Awards for his “show-stopping” (Entertainment Weekly) performance which “soars to stratospheric vocal heights” (Time Out New York).
Besides the nine Tony Award nominations, Shucked has also been honored with 12 Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical, seven Outer Critics Circle Awards including Best Musical, and three Drama League Awards including Best Musical.
Receiving praise from publications such as Entertainment Weekly and Variety for its comedy and acting, Shucked is a musical made to entertain. Shucked also stars the award-winning ensemble of (in order) Outer Critics Circle Award nominee John Behlmann, Tony Award and Drama Desk Award nominee Kevin Cahoon, Drama Desk Award nominee Andrew Durand, Tony Award nominee Grey Henson, Theatre World Award winner and Drama Desk Award nominee Caroline Innerbichler, and Theatre World Award winner Ashley D. Kelley.
