Syncing Ink is set to hit The Apollo Stages on May 7, 2024, in an electrifying convergence of rhythm, culture, and storytelling. The play, created by the talented playwright NSangou Njikam, reunites the original cast for its inaugural Off-Broadway run, promising an unforgettable celebration of hip-hop and Yoruba culture. The Apollo’s newest theaters, nestled in the revitalized Victoria Theater, will be the stage for this unique and powerful production. Ancestral energy, poured into every aspect by the creators and cast, ensures that the audience will feel the heartbeat of Syncing Ink resonate with them throughout the performance.
The play boasts an exceptional cast, including 2X Tony Nominee Kara Young, Bessie Nominee Adesola Osakalumi, and the internationally renowned stylist Ty Hunter as the costume designer. Directed by Drama Desk Award Nominee Awoye Timpo, Syncing Ink is choreographed by Bessie Award Nominee Adesola Osakalumi and features original music composed by producer and emcee Kyleel “Proda” Rolle. With such a stellar creative team, Syncing Ink promises to be a groundbreaking and immersive experience for theater enthusiasts.
Syncing Ink follows the coming-of-age journey of Gordon Morris, destined to become a Master of the Ceremony. Rooted in traditional Yoruba culture, the play challenges Gordon to embrace the power of his words for himself, his family, and the fate of hip-hop itself. As the 50th year of hip-hop culture is celebrated, NSangou Njikam, the creator, shares his excitement, “I am honored to join my fellow Masters of the Ceremony as we step into the Victoria to spit fire.”

I attended an exclusive kick-off event for Syncing Ink at the Ginjan Cafe in Harlem in February. As soon as you walked into the room you could feel the energy of excitement with the cast and its supporters. They all took turns explaining their experiences on this project and the excitement for all to see it. There are so many amazing pieces that fit together to make Syncing Ink what it is and I cannot wait to see it when it in May.
The play is scheduling its first preview on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, with the grand opening on Sunday, May 19, 2024.
