( ENSPIRE Entertainment ) The Pulitzer Prize-Winning ‘Fat Ham’ is Back
FAT HAM does it once again with its latest revival of the hit Broadway show which is now playing at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. We recently attended the show before its opening night during its run on the West Coast, and trust me when I say the third time is truly a charm. I first saw the show at the Public Theater in NYC and knew instantly that it would be perfect on Broadway, so when it made its way to the Todd Haimes Theatre it was only right that we had to be in attendance.
The hilarious queer adaptation of Hamlet is one hell of an emotional rollercoaster that only James could brilliantly pull off which is exactly why he won a Pulitzer Prize for the outstanding work. But after being nominated for 5 Tony Awards I wondered if other audiences could experience this brilliant piece of work, the same excellent cast, and to my surprise, they were all back to bless the stage for this limited run.
Marcel Spears’s performance as Juicy is one that I can repeatedly witness, as he delivers such a powerful display of comedy, drama, and empathy in the 90-minute show he fearlessly leads along with an incredible supporting cast. Obie Award-winning actor Billy Eugene Jones once again gives a head-turning performance as he portrays Rev and Pap flawlessly going toe to toe with Juicy in both roles. Now we can’t forget the mesmerizing Nikki Crawford as Juicy’s mother Tedra. The hilarious firecracker truly knows how to bring the house down with her larger-than-life performance that just radiates and makes her co-stars shine in every way possible. Now of course the remainder of the cast which included Chris Herbie Holland, Adrianna Mitchell, Benja Kay Thomas & Matthew Elijah Webb all gave incredible performances that truly had the audience in an uproar throughout the show which led to a standing ovation for all once the show ended.
As the show concluded with a show-stopping musical number, although the show is based on a tragedy the celebration of love, happiness, and acceptance was the real story we all walked away with. Upon leaving the theater, I ran into actor J Marques Johnson star of Tyler Perry’s ‘All The Queens Men’ who raved about the show stating ” Everything about the show was brilliant. I loved the overall theme and all-around storytelling of allowing people to be themselves and love who they are. The show was brilliant from top to bottom and every actor in the show gave it their all and left everything on that stage. I will be back to see it again.” Now if you know like I do, then you will take his word for it and run down to the Geffen Theater to catch this must-see show before its run ends on May 5th. Tickets can be purchased directly at their box office or online here.
