In this Q&A, we sat down with PRocon founder Keisha Brewer to discuss the inspiration behind the event, the specific trends and challenges PRocon 2024 will address, and how aspiring PR professionals can benefit from attending.
What inspired you to create this event?
As someone who started off in news writing and reporting and then transitioned into public relations and has always been vocal about my online work, I increasingly received questions about how to get into the communications industry. There was a desire to be in the field, but many were getting stuck on the pipeline and entering and growing in this space. Knowing that I wanted to create a space for all communications professionals—whether just starting in this industry, looking to grow in the industry, or have been a veteran in this industry—to connect, learn, and grow together…getting us out of the silos of our computer screens and into the field sharing ideas, learning trends, sharpening our skills, inspiring one another, and collectively elevating the standards of our industry.
The PR landscape is constantly evolving. What specific industry trends and challenges will PRocon 2024 address?
PRocon 2024 is designed to tackle some of the most pressing trends and challenges in our industry, such as the increasing importance of digital and social media strategies, navigating the complexities of media relationships in an ever-changing media landscape, learning how to brand yourself, having a strategy to secure and retain clientele, and more. We’re also focusing on the evolving relationship between the public relations, media, marketing, and communications disciplines, especially in a time when traditional media is facing significant disruptions.
With a projected market exceeding $133 billion by 2027, the need for skilled PR professionals is growing. How does PRocon 2024 contribute to developing this talent pool?
PRocon 2024 is committed to nurturing the next generation of PR professionals by offering hands-on workshops, mentorship opportunities, and sessions led by industry veterans at the forefront of the profession. Our event is not just about learning current trends but also about developing the strategic thinking and adaptability that are essential for long-term success in this field. At PRocon, we’ve curated numerous opportunities for meaningful networking and collaboration—not just among public relations professionals but among PRos in all communications disciplines (PR, marketing, media, and communications). The key is understanding that we all need each other to gain maximum results for our clients. With a room full of us all, the collaboration and networking happen organically. However, from our pre-conference mixer, ‘Taste of PRocon,’ to the VIP lounge and exclusive breakout sessions, there are countless ways for attendees to connect with peers, mentors, and industry leaders. We’ve also designed interactive panels and workshops encouraging group discussions and collaborative problem-solving. We aim to ensure that everyone leaves PRocon with valuable connections and a sense of belonging within a supportive community.
What differentiates PRocon 2024 from other PR conferences beyond the networking and learning aspects?
For one: Our space is primarily full of Black and Brown communications professionals, which we find a rarity among PR and communications conferences. We also bring value and vibes (as we like to say). At conferences, you’re either having a perfect time without much substance or overwhelmed with substance to the point of not enjoying yourself. We’ve created a space where two things can be true—you can walk away with tangible information to help you do your job the next week while also really enjoying yourself. We have lots of opportunities for content, too, and we know PRos love that 🙂 We also have great food by our sponsor, Oohhs & Aahhs, and drinks crafted by our bartending partner, Mixin’ MiMi 😉
PRocon’s mission statement mentions “filling the void.” Can you explain the specific industry gap PRocon aims to address through this event?
The void we’re addressing is the lack of spaces where PR professionals can connect on a deeper level, beyond surface-level networking. Many conferences focus on delivering content, but few prioritize fostering a genuine sense of community and shared growth. PRocon fills this gap by creating an environment where professionals can learn from each other, build lasting relationships, and support one another’s careers. We’re bridging the divide between education and community, ensuring attendees gain knowledge and become part of a network that will support them long after the event ends.
How do you envision PRocon growing to continue serving the PR and communications community?
I envision PRocon becoming a global cornerstone event for PR and communications professionals. As we expand, we’ll continue to evolve with the industry, introducing new topics, speakers, and formats that address the latest trends and challenges. We also plan to extend our reach beyond the annual conference, offering year-round resources, webinars, and networking opportunities. Our goal is to create a sustained learning, growth, and community-building platform that supports professionals at every stage of their careers.
