Ethelbert Chukwubuikem Anum, a high-achieving student at Talladega College in Alabama, isn’t just excelling in his studies; he’s shaping the future of financial literacy for young Black Americans. Anum is one of the first HBCU students to complete the groundbreaking “Mind Over Money Skills” certification program, now available for free to all HBCU students nationwide. Fueled by a desire to empower his peers, he’s on a mission to help them build generational wealth.

Anum explains, “When we’re young, we’re told we have time to recover from bad financial decisions. But we don’t have to make those bad decisions in the first place if we know better. Financial literacy is invaluable because it helps people like me achieve wealth, be financially secure, and have peace of mind. We can take control of our livelihoods by learning about financial literacy and paving a better financial future for ourselves and the people we love.”

His passion aligns perfectly with the goals of the “Mind Over Money Skills” program launched by the Society for Financial Education & Professional Development (SFEPD). Recognizing the vast U.S. wealth gap, SFEPD designed this eight-part online curriculum specifically for college students, focusing on HBCUs. This free program equips students with the knowledge and skills to navigate personal finances, manage debt, plan a retirement, and make informed investment decisions.

“This pilot program has equipped our students with game-changing knowledge about their finances. The material is crisp, clear, relevant, and resonates loudly with our students,” said Hampton University President Darrell K. Williams. “I’m proud of our collaboration with SFEPD, and I look forward to continuing to make student financial literacy a core aspect of the Hampton University higher education experience.”

The “Mind Over Money Skills” curriculum covers a broad range of topics, including:

  • Budgeting, Values, and Financial Goal Setting
  • Student Loan Management
  • Homeownership Planning
  • Retirement Planning
  • Credit and Debt Management
  • Insurance
  • Investor Education
  • Estate Planning

Each module takes about an hour to complete, making it accessible for busy students. Upon completing a module and passing an assessment, participants receive a verified digital badge from Credly showcasing their financial literacy certification.

Ethelbert Chukwubuikem Anum is a testament to the power of financial education.
