Spike Lee is back and better than ever. This time, he’s merging two generations of Black talent in a film that blends culture, conflict, and conscience. Highest 2 Lowest, starring Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky, is a reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, set in present-day New York.
Denzel plays David King, a powerful music icon faced with a life-altering decision when a kidnapping forces him to choose between his fortune and his values. A$AP Rocky, as Yung Felon, brings raw energy as an emerging rapper whose actions spark the film’s tense chain of events. Spike Lee directs with his signature style—purposeful, sharp, and always captivating. But this film doesn’t just entertain. It speaks. It questions power, legacy, and how money and morality often collide in our communities.

Highest 2 Lowest doesn’t water anything down. It shines a bright light on themes of class, identity, and the cost of silence—and it does so unapologetically through a Black lens.
The cast is stacked with both established and emerging talent. Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, and Ice Spice (in her film debut) bring a fresh but familiar presence to the screen. The dialogue cuts deep, the situations resonate, and the message reaches beyond the screen into real-life conversations about justice and responsibility.
This is more than a crime drama—it’s an urgent cultural statement. The film raises questions that linger long after the credits roll.

Highest 2 Lowest premieres in theaters on August 15 and will stream on Apple TV+ in early September. It’s already making waves, earning a standing ovation at Cannes and early praise for its bold direction and powerhouse performances.
For fans of stories that reflect Black life with honesty, depth, and complexity, this is one not to miss.
