( ENSPIRE Feature ) Miss Universe Brings Diversity to its Pageant
Miss South Africa, Zozibini Tunzi invigorated the world with her answer on leadership about the youth and how she wants to impact the community. Being aware of the pageant’s history of the lack of it being rare to see a woman of color or minority winning, she did not let that stop her shine.
“It’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time – not because we don’t want to, but because of what society has labeled women to be, “Zozibini said.”I think we are the most powerful beings in the world, and that we should be given every opportunity.”And that is what we should be teaching these young girls to take up space.”
The inspiring speech was aimed at women as well as women of color because until recently, winners of pageants did not have a person of color winning. For the first time in pageant history, Miss America, Miss USA, Miss Teen, and Miss Universe all had women of color winning. The space that Zozibini was talking about was telling women of color that they can reach their dreams no matter what society throws at them.
“I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me, with my kind of skin and my kind of hair, was never considered to be beautiful.”I think that it is time that that stops today.”
After Zozibini won, it was a trending topic on social media and people were happy that they finally picked a brown skin woman that had short hair. Some of the people who were tweeting about the pageant said it was a long time coming and they are proud that Zozibini made history. Change is coming and it is about time that diversity is shown in the spotlight!
