Km Xtend Hair is a cosmetologist who specializes in hair and eyelash extensions. Km Xtend launched in 2020 during the pandemic where salons were experiencing difficulty accessing quality hair extensions. The market wasn’t offering quality hair products to salons and stylists, so Km wanted to extend some love to consumers and salons. This company strives to provide higher-quality hair extensions that a salon cannot match alone. Consumers needed a better option for affordable hair extensions, so Km offered just that. The extensions are made from 100% human hair and use keratin tips and quality tape. We see many celebrities such as Vanessa Hudgens and Paris Hilton rocking their hair extensions. We spoke to Km Xtend about their company and how they empower women through their exceptional services.
What inspired you to open this business?
I’ve been in the cosmetology field for over 20 years, but my passion was not to work in a salon or behind the chair. I’ve always loved the beauty industry, but my love is having a fantastic product that people want to use because it makes them feel confident, and the quality is excellent!
Do you offer any other products besides hair extensions?
Yes, we offer mink and faux mink lashes and have recently started offering wigs.
What services do you provide at your company?
We provide top-notch customer service, and we also do color matching. In addition, for any salon or anyone wanting to create a private label, we can help them build their logo or their brand for their new hair extension line.
What made you choose a career path in beauty, health, and wellness?
Since high school, beauty has always been my passion. I also have a career in insurance which is the complete opposite of beauty. However, beauty helps keep me involved in my passion, and I love the creativity of this industry.
How will you continue to grow your brand?
We will continue to work with influencers, and word of mouth is actually really big. Once you have a great product, other people want to tell other people. So we will continue to work with salons as well and continue to pursue private labeling.
Do you have any more plans for the company down the road?
At the moment, we want to focus on growing the brand and hopefully allowing it to become a known brand name in the industry. So the plans are just to grow it to that point, maybe add more products down the road but not quite at this time.
What positive statement would you like to give to women?
You are beautiful just the way you are. But if you do want an enhancement or a pick-me-up, hair extensions are a great way to boost your confidence.
Can you share a success story you’ve had since starting your business?
Our success breeds off of other’s success. We’ve helped several salons set up their own hair extensions, which they’ve wanted to do but couldn’t get started due to high minimum order requirements, not finding the right supplier, etc. We have been there to help with that, and it’s been very successful.
Can you share a challenge you’ve faced with your business during the pandemic?
We started the business during the pandemic. Hair extensions were definitely not something that we were being purchased at that time. It wasn’t a “necessity,” and most hair salons were closed. Before that, I had already done my research for 10+ years on finding the right manufacturer for this brand. So during the pandemic, I really just got all the logistics set up with the website, product photos, etc. Once the ban started to lift and people were ready to repurchase hair, I was prepared to start taking orders. It actually worked in my favor because salons were experiencing some pain with their current suppliers not getting hair, or the quality of the hair significantly decreased. So I was able to pick up a lot of business from the frustration of all that.
How will your business continue to inspire women to feel more beautiful?
We’ve had some people come to us for wigs if they’ve gone through chemo because they were losing their hair. We’ve had people come to us in tears because they cut their hair and absolutely hate the cut. We’ve also had people that just wanted some temporary locks in the form of clip-ins for a special occasion so they can wear a particular updo or style. So we’ve had a lot of reasons people want extensions or wigs, but at the end of the day, it’s how our product makes someone feel that’s important to us.
What are five hair health tips you would recommend? If you could give a short description to follow each one, that would be great:
What are the healthiest extensions for hair?
Make sure you are purchasing from a reputable source. There are a lot of cheap hair extensions on the market. Some even sell horse hair! Healthy extensions usually come from one donor, one ponytail. You want to look for hair that is also “double drawn,” meaning that the factory will go through and sort through all the hairs and make sure they are selecting all the hairs that are the same length. And then they will do it again. This way, there are no short hairs, and the consistency and thickness are the same from the root to the tip of the hair.
How often is it ok to use hair extensions?
Clip-ins can be popped in and out as needed. But we do have some people that will wear their clip-ins almost every single day. This is fine as long as you do not sleep in them. Hand-tied extensions can typically be used for up to a year. Your normal hair obviously continues to grow, so there is a grow-out period just like with color, and you’ll need to get them moved up every 6-8 weeks. During these move-up appointments, the stylist may even attach the beads to different hair, so there isn’t the strain in the same hair for that long time. It’s best to give your hair a break from the beads.
What products to maintain healthy hair with hair extensions?
You definitely want to use sulfate-free shampoo from a professional salon-approved brand—a big no-no to drug store brands. We personally love Unite hydrating shampoo and conditioner and their leave-in conditioner as well as their oil. You also want to make sure you are using a professional hydrating oil on the mid hair shaft to the ends of the hair because hair extensions are not getting the oils from your scalp that your normal hair does. So we need to add the oils to the ends ourselves. We also don’t over wash, nor do we want product buildup, so washing the extensions 1-2 times per week is best.
What makes Km Xtend extensions the best for thinning hair?
We have many options to choose from, but hand-tied extensions are an excellent option for thinning hair. Just make sure to select a salon that has professional certifications and training in these various methods.
