Laal Singh Chaddha is a drama/romance movie based on Forrest Gump by Winston Groom and Eric Roth. Forrest Gump is a popular Hollywood movie that highlighted sensitive topics such as bullying, and intellectual and physical disability. It has won 13 Oscars to date and has many award nominations. Laal Singh Chaddha is the Indian version of Forrest Gump directed by Advait Chandan. It took Atul Kulkarni 10 years to write a perfect script that would do justice to the original movie Forrest Gump. It was produced by Amir Khan Productions and Viacom18 Studios. Amir Khan, the lead actor, and producer confessed in a recent interview, that it took another 10 years for purchasing the remake rights.
Laal Singh Chaddha portrays the journey of a simple man with disabilities making extraordinary accomplishments in life. His life is filled with love, achievements, hardships, and the belief, that the sky is the limit. His greatest source of support was his mother, a character played by Mona Singh. She gave him the confidence that he was not average but exceptional. Kareena Kapoor Khan plays Laal’s love interest Rupa in the film.
The movie raises some serious concerns regarding kids with special needs: how they are considered outcasts and how people make fun of them for being different. It has depicted the stereotypical South Asian Society where everyone is expected to be normal, where people with disabilities and mental health issues are not treated kindly.
The creators have tried their best to keep the original theme intact while presenting it as a Bollywood film in Indian cinemas. They have called it more of an adaptation than a remake as scripts for both movies are completely different. The movie was released on August 11, 2022. Because of its different script, it is being criticized and appreciated at the same time by Indian fans. The movie is getting positive reviews internationally so far. The Academy has uploaded the video of Laal Singh Chaddha with the clip of Forrest Gump on its official Instagram account. This is proof of the popularity and recognition the movie is receiving globally.
