As the year ends, music listeners assemble a list of their favorite works from throughout the year. This will include music critics, fans, and professionals alike. One of these is Capitol Music Group, which released its Year-End Album and Song Lists. One word that can define these lists is diversity. That is not meant as a buzzword, but a multilevel description. First, there is diversity among all the artists, who come from many backgrounds. Next, there is the diversity of genre, as the list contains works from singer-songwriter Elvis Costello, electronic duo Bob Moses, and alt-pop singer Amelia Moore. Finally, there is diversity among new and established artists, as familiar names like Babyface appear alongside Ice Spice, whose career began in 2021.
With the end of the year nearing, that also means that the Christmas season is approaching too. That means the inevitable uptick in streams for Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You.” Aside from this, it’s also a time to give music as a gift. Not only is it a way to show appreciation for your loved ones, it’s also a way to appreciate artists and local businesses, such as record stores. Official merchandise also makes a great gift and there are always so many options. Gone are the days of band shirts, as there are now sweats, hoodies, baseball caps, and even more nontraditional items, such as a collectible brick Eminem sold in 2016.
