On February 15, 2023, Unbound Studios and subsidiary company JM Films announces their first feature film called ‘Water & Garri’. This film was directed and edited by Meji Alabi and produced by Jimi Adesanya. Tiwa Savage is one of the main cast stars of the film, including the music creator behind the soundtrack. Tiwa Savage is an executive producer through her company called ‘Everything Savage’ and beside her is Vanessa Amadi-Ogbonna.
Photography for this film has been wrapped up in Cape Coast, Ghana. Other cast members for ‘Water & Garri’ are Mike Afolarin, Andrew Bunting, and Jemima Osunde. ‘Water & Garri’ is about Aisha (Tiwa Savage) who is an ambitious fashion designer in the U.S. who ventures to her native home after ten years. However, there is more violence and the tension has escalated. She reconnects with family, old friends, and a past love but must learn to navigate her past scars. Will she be able to confront the guilt and decision of leaving her home behind?
After wrapping up the film director Meji Alabi commented, “Working with Tiwa Savage and the team on Water & Garri filmed on location in Cape Coast, Ghana was an incredible experience. We’ve worked together on multiple music projects over the years and this film was a perfect progression of our creative growth & shared vision of exploring beyond boundaries. It’s such an exciting story and Tiwa nailed her debut as a lead actress amongst an incredible supporting cast. Looking forward to sharing this film with the world.”
Tiwa Savage also mentioned what the project of ‘Water & Garri’ meant for her. “This project was a complete labor of love that has been a dream of mine for a number of years. Performing as Aisha allowed me to be totally vulnerable and pushed me to express myself in a way that I’ve never done before.”
Tiwa Savage was a big part of this film’s creation. Her career started as a backup singer for Mary J. Blige, Kelly Clarkson, and Andrea Bocelli. She signed a global record deal with Universal Music Group and was one of the first African artists to be featured on the cover of Billboard Magazine. Savage has done music collaborations with Sam Smith, Coldplay, Nas, and Beyonce. She wrote for Fantasia’s Grammy-nominated album called ‘Back to Me’. Other accomplishments include winning an MTV European Music Award for Best African Act, being crowned ‘Women Changing Modern Music’ by British Vogue, and receiving the Women4Africa Award in 2022.
