The Broadway musical Some Like It Hot is for those who love an old-fashioned theatrical spectacle. It’s full of energetic hype, with twists, turns, and stunning performances. The Broadway show is performed at the Sam S. Shubert Theatre. Matthew Lopez and Amber Ruffin created the book, Marc Shaiman the music and the lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman. This new production expands on that theme, diversifies the players, and shakes up the story so it still feels like Some Like It Hot, but the result is something that can stand and high-kick on its own.
Some Like It Hot’s main cast includes Christian Borle as Joe aka Josephine, J. Harrison Ghee as Jerry aka Daphne, Adrianna Hicks as Sugar, Kevin Del Aguila as Osgood, Natasha Yvette Williams as Sweet Sue, Adam Heller as Mulligan, and Mark Lotito as Spats. The design team for Some Like It Hot includes Scott Pask (Scenic Design), Gregg Barnes (Costume Design), Natasha Katz (Lighting Design), and Brian Ronan (Sound Design).
Some Like It Hot is about two band players, Joe and Jerry, aiming for the big leagues. However, they are at the wrong place at the wrong time, witnessing a mob crime they aren’t supposed to see. They soon end up on the run and need to find a living. They find an opportunity in a swing band but they must disguise themselves as women. Joe ‘Josephine’ ends up falling for the lead singer Sugar, meanwhile, Jerry makes a self discovers and learns who he is through ‘Daphne’.
There have been astounding reviews about Some Like It Hot since the popularity of the 1959 film. The 60s flare and costume design bring you into that era. With savvy and playful choreography directed by Casey Nicholaw and high-energy musical numbers that lead the crowds to a standing ovation. This Broadway musical packed heat and flare for all to see.
