On August 11, Miguel released his next single “Number 9 feat. Lil Yachty” from his highly anticipated and now confirmed forthcoming album via ByStorm Entertainment/RCA Records. The new release from Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter/artist Miguel mesmerizes with ethereal vocals and hypnotizing sounds that pulse through this addicting earworm, accentuated by a verse from Lil Yachty. Hovering in the background Miguel chants “Wash It” to symbolize the numerological meaning of the number nine. It represents an awakening from life experiences and struggles that he expresses throughout the song. Miguel says this song is “about ending the old, starting new, and the cylindrical nature of change.”

The previous week, Miguel reached new heights with the release of Sony’s “For the Music” campaign where he came up with the concept of scaling a massive skyscraper and breaking through the building’s glass window. The one-minute visual uses “Number 9 feat. Lil Yachty” within the commercial, which symbolizes the upcoming era in music of breaking creative barriers and new beginnings. Though nine is his final numeral, the track is anything but a finale. In fact, August 11th also marked the confirmation of Miguel’s forthcoming album in Fall 2023. He shares that his new album will be focused on his divorce from ex-wife, model, and influencer Nazanin Mandi, as the content mainly deals with grief. He also spoke about his multi-genre interests, saying that the music industry wasn’t always inclusive of his range of musical tastes.

Combining a creamy tenor with soul-searching confessionals and cosmic soundscapes, Miguel renders tales of romance and personal transformation with an effortless, eclectic style. Since emerging in 2010, the singer-songwriter has oscillated between genres and feelings on his way to becoming a defining voice of modern alternative R&B. It’s a path he began blazing early on. With its blend of electronic, rock, R&B, and funk, his debut album, “All I Want Is You” earned critical acclaim before being certified platinum and characterized alt R&B in the 2010s. In 2013, he wrote and produced, “Adorn.” This hit song garnered Miguel his first Grammy Award for Best R&B Song and lived at No.1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart for more than 23 weeks. It became the longest-running No. 1 single in the history of the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. The same year, he reunited with Cole on the rapper’s hit single “Power Trip,” which peaked at No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Propelled by his interstellar Travis Scott-featured lead single, “Sky Walker,” the 2017 album earned critical acclaim and landed at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. It also secured his third No. 1 debut on the Billboard R&B Albums chart. More recently, his All I Want Is You single, “Sure Thing,” went viral on TikTok with over 23M creations as it surged to the No. 15 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Released 13 years ago, its resurgence is evidence of a sound that’s at once timeless and futuristic — just like the person who made it.
