ENSPIRE spoke with Bella Blaq about her music career; here’s what she shared.
What motivated you to be a musician as your profession?
Music has always been a huge part of who I am. It’s more than just a passion; it’s like music chose me. From a young age, I knew I had a talent for it, and despite trying out various other paths in life, nothing ever felt as fulfilling as creating music. Through the ups and downs, the triumphs and traumas, music has remained my safe place. It’s my true calling. So I didn’t so much choose music as it chose me, and I’m grateful every day for the opportunity to express myself through this incredible art form.
What would be the most important message for your followers?
My message is simple, keep going. Life is full of distractions, obstacles, and challenges, but it’s essential not to let them trick you off your path. Stay focused, stay determined, and keep pushing forward, no matter what. Be unapologetic in your pursuit of your dreams and goals. Embrace who you are and what you’re passionate about, and never let anything stand in the way of your success and happiness. Remember, resilience and perseverance are key, and with dedication and determination, you can overcome any obstacle that comes your way. So, to all my fans, keep going with life, stay true to yourselves, and never give up on your dreams.
How do you characterize your genre of music?
I would characterize my genre of music as hip hop, a genre that resonates deeply with me and allows me to express myself authentically. I draw inspiration from iconic figures like Jay Z, whose storytelling prowess and lyrical mastery have greatly influenced my style. Many people have even dubbed me the “female Hov,” which is both humbling and incredibly motivating. Like Jay Z, I strive to deliver lyrics that are not only thought-provoking but also reflective of my personal experiences and the world around me. Hip hop, to me, is more than just music; it’s a platform for storytelling, empowerment, and social commentary. And through my music, I aim to honor the legacy of hip-hop while also carving out my unique voice and narrative.
What challenges have you encountered as a musician, and how did you overcome them?
As a musician, I’ve faced many challenges that have tested my resilience and determination. One significant hurdle I’ve had to navigate is balancing motherhood with my career. Juggling the demands of raising kids while pursuing my passion for music has been a constant juggling act, requiring careful time management and dedication. Additionally, I’ve confronted issues of colorism and bullying, particularly as a dark-skinned woman in the industry. Overcoming these challenges has required a lot of self-confidence and a refusal to let others define my worth based on superficial criteria. I’ve embraced who and what I am and used my platform to advocate for inclusivity and representation within the music industry and throughout my life. I faced a life-changing setback in 2019 when I was involved in a car wreck and was told I might never walk again. This experience forced me to confront myself with so much and rebuild my life from scratch. Despite the overwhelming obstacles, I refused to accept defeat. Each of these challenges has shaped me into the artist, woman, and human I am today. They’ve taught me the importance of perseverance, self-belief, and resilience in the face of adversity. And while the journey hasn’t been easy, overcoming these obstacles has only strengthened my resolve to pursue my passion for music and inspire others to do the same.
Blaq has had many challenges in her life, from adolescence to adulthood. However, she has persevered and never given up, which motivates her listeners. Her songs are inspirational, conveying a strong message of resilience and optimism. Blaq aspires to inspire others by demonstrating that anything is possible for those who have faith and perseverance. We cannot wait for her EP “Dirt Roads” to be shared with the world, especially with her loved fans.
