Your stand-up career thrives on finding humor in death. Where did this unique comedic inspiration come from?

I find humor in everything. The aspect of death comes from my family’s work in the funeral business. That’s the main thing that sets me apart from everyone else.

Balancing comedy with your work as a funeral director sounds like a demanding juggling act. How do you navigate these seemingly opposite roles?

I’m a traveling comedian. While I’m away, my mother and sister handle the day-to-day operations of the funeral business.

What’s been the most surprising fan reaction to your show?

People who’ve never heard of me come to my show and are surprised at how funny I am. I love that. It feels good when someone new becomes a fan.

Let’s discuss your new podcast, “To Laugh at Death.” Why is having open conversations about death so meaningful to you?

It’s important because people can use it to find closure. I feel like God gave us laughter to help usendure the hardships of life.

How has going viral impacted your career as a comedian and funeral director?

It’s put me out in front of the world. I’m forever grateful for social media. I always tell people that social media put me out front, but God’s grace and my talent kept me out front.

How do you find time to balance work with your family life?

My wife is the biggest help with this. I forget stuff all the time, and she helps me remember things. There isn’t a perfect formula, but we try our best to communicate and help each other.

What’s next for Shuler King? Can you hint at acting aspirations, new podcast projects, or surprise ventures?

Yes, there are some acting opportunities on the table. My business partner and I are currently working on opening our first location for Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks in South Carolina. The rest of my projects will have to be a surprise.
