Dr. Leonard N. Moore is a pivotal figure in collegiate athletics. He is a distinguished professor of American History at the University of Texas at Austin, a champion for Black student-athletes. He recognizes these young individuals’ unique challenges and opportunities, which is why Dr. Moore established the Black Student-Athlete Summit. This transformative four-day event has become a place of support and empowerment for all Black student-athletes. What started as a passion project has now transformed into a powerful movement. Based on his experiences as a mentor during his graduate studies at Ohio State University, the Black Student-Athlete Summit annually unites over 1,700 Black student-athletes alongside professionals and influential voices from the world of college sports.
Dr. Moore dedicates his leadership to creating a vital space for young athletes to connect with role models, gain insights, and build a supportive community. His deeply personal connection to sports, fueled by his experience navigating the student-athlete journey with his own children, drives his commitment to providing mentorship, guidance, and networking opportunities. This dynamic platform transcends the boundaries of individual sports, embracing talent from football to basketball, track and field, baseball, golf, and beyond.

The summit has had speakers and participants who greatly impacted the athletic world. Notable figures such as Baron Davis, Jemele Hill, Rich Paul, and Renee Montgomery have graced the event, sharing their wisdom and experiences. This year marks a milestone as the summit expands to the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago on May 21-24, 2025, and its influence is growing and stronger than ever.
Beyond the summit, Dr. Moore’s commitment to education and mentorship is further exemplified by his remarkable teaching career and dedication to providing study abroad opportunities for African-American students. His journey, overcoming a challenging high school record to earn a Ph.D., is a testament to his perseverance and the transformative impact of dedicated mentorship. Dr. Moore is celebrating 10 years of unwavering advocacy through the Black Student Athlete Summit, shaping the lives of young athletes.
