The Big East Conference is starting its fourth consecutive season in partnership with the Black Fives Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to preserving and celebrating the pre-NBA history of African Americans in basketball. This year’s initiative, themed “Pioneers of Change,” will illuminate the remarkable stories of early African American basketball players who revolutionized the game and paved the way for future generations. Throughout the season, Big East players will don shooting shirts featuring the phrase “Pioneers of Change” alongside the logos of historic Black Fives basketball teams.

These teams, active from the early 1900s through the 1940s, often played in venues within the same geographic footprint as many of today’s Big East schools. This connection underscores these pioneers’ historical significance and lasting influence on the sport. “This season, we are once again honored to spotlight the powerful and inspiring stories of African American pioneers who laid the groundwork for the game of basketball as we know it today,” stated Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman. “Their legacy inspires our athletes and communities, and we’re proud that the Big East  platform will be used to celebrate and elevate their impact in a meaningful way.”

Claude Johnson, founder of the Black Fives Foundation, expressed his enthusiasm for the continued partnership. “We are thrilled to continue collaborating with the Big East Conference,” Johnson said. “This partnership gives us the chance to honor these pioneers who broke barriers and shaped basketball history. By amplifying their stories, we can give them a voice and ensure their contributions resonate far beyond the court.”

Fans can join the celebration during the 22 Big East Men’s and Women’s Basketball games, where players will wear the commemorative shooting shirts. This tribute will bring the stories of these pioneering athletes to a broader audience. This event will ensure their legacy continues to inspire.
