After teasing the single’s cover art on social media and hinting at an upcoming release, Madison Beer finally dropped her sultry and heartfelt single, ‘Dangerous’, last Friday (Aug. 26). Described by the American singer as “the most personal song” she’s ever done, the song details the 23-year-old’s experience with heartbreak and wading through a toxic love.
While Madison Beer has released several other break-up songs, like ‘Selfish’ (2020) and ‘Reckless’ (2021), the singer channels a novel self-reflective and sultry energy in ‘Dangerous. The cover art for the new song embodies this shift, depicting a dreamy bed calmly floating on an undisturbed ocean.
In the accompanying ‘Dangerous’ music video, dropped on Beer’s YouTube channel the same day as her single, the singer takes center stage to drive home the heartbreak. The strength of the music video is its simplicity. While it lacks the excitement and energy of some of Beer’s previous music videos, the fact that it focuses so intently on the singer herself as she delivers the lyrics to ‘Dangerous’ while standing on a small circular stage, surrounded by a simple orchestra, emphasizes her pain and adds layers to the song itself.
The full force of Beer’s heartbreak comes through the strongest in the song’s chorus, which reads almost like a desperate plea for answers and closure:
“Tell me the truth, what did I do? / Look at me, why can’t I see?
No, it can’t be this easy to let me go / But if you say so
Guess I make love too dangerous.”
In the days following the release of ‘Dangerous’, the singer has received an outpouring of love, appreciation, and support from her fans. “thank u for the love on dangerous already,” says Beer on Twitter. “I wrote this from a very wounded place and this song is a very special one to me — I appreciate u so much, thank u for allowing me to articulate and share.”
