To celebrate March 10th, sometimes known as MAR10 Day, Nintendo has released a new trailer for the upcoming Super Mario Brothers Movie. First announced in January 2018, the film will release on April 5th of this year. Introduced in 1981, the character of Mario has been an enduring media icon for over 40 years. Having appeared in video games, comic books, cartoons, and even a live-action movie, this will be the first feature-length Super Mario animated film.
Unlike the live-action film from 1993, this Super Mario Brothers movie will be animated, and by Illumination, the same studio that created the Despicable Me franchise and the Minion characters. The film will follow Mario and Luigi, two brothers running a plumbing business in New York City, who are sucked into the magical fantasy land of the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario and Luigi are played by Chris Pratt and Charlie Day, respectively.
Along their journey, the Mario Brothers will meet colorful characters like Princess Peach (Anya-Taylor Joy), Donkey Kong (Seth Rogan), Toad (Keegan Michael Key), and the evil King Bowser (Jack Black). The cast of voice actors has been going on press runs to build up excitement for the upcoming release. Just recently they appeared on the Jimmy Fallon show, where they all sang the iconic theme from the first level of Super Mario Brothers together. There will be more press events like this in the future to look forward to.
When he appeared as the protagonist of the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong, Mario had not yet been given his name, and was only known as “Jump Man”. In 1983, the Mario Bros. arcade game was released as a sequel to Donkey Kong, and two years later, Super Mario Bros. would be packaged with new Nintendo Entertainment System video game consoles. Since then, the Super Mario Bros. franchise has spawned over 200 video games.
The Super Mario Brothers Movie will be available in theaters nationwide starting April 5th. After 45 days, the movie will be released on the Peacock streaming service. The film will find its way to Netflix in late 2023.
