We spoke with Nyarko to learn more about her and her practice.

What did starting your practice entail? Were there any specific challenges you needed to overcome?

Starting my practice entailed taking the proper steps to bring my vision across. Some things I put in place were education and training, always learning to be ready for the task, developing a business plan, which includes defining my target market, setting goals and objectives, creating a budget, securing necessary resources, which provides office space and equipment, and marketing and promotion. I opened my doors in the heat of the COVID-19 pandemic, so most of the patients I treated during that time became my established patients now. I also focused on providing high-quality service. I needed to provide excellent care to my clients to build a solid reputation and attract repeat business.

Most of the challenges I encountered involved credentialing with insurance companies. Some have closed their panels, and some will pay peanuts for the services rendered.

How did you know you wanted to enter the healthcare profession?

After relocating here from my motherland, Ghana, I have always cared for the most vulnerable. Also, I had a brother who had Kidney disease, and treatment was not very accessible because of a lack of understanding. I proposed then that I would like to dive more into health to learn and help others.

What are some positive impacts you have seen in your community since opening your practice?

Since opening my clinic, I have had several impacts, including providing access to quality healthcare, creating job opportunities and training other NPs and MAs, improving patient outcomes with a focus on preventative care, early intervention, and a holistic treatment approach, and collaborating with other healthcare providers.

How has opening your practice changed your everyday life? How do you manage your responsibilities as a business owner and healthcare professional?

The clinic has changed my life in a couple of ways. I am fulfilled knowing that I positively impact patients’ health and well-being, which gives me purpose and satisfaction. Lastly, I’ve grown professionally by expanding my knowledge and skills and taking on leadership roles.

Concerning work balance, I have more control over my schedule and work environment. I have control over the number of patients I see per hour. Being a business owner and healthcare professional is very demanding; I identify and prioritize tasks essential for both roles. Delegate responsibilities so I can focus on the most important things and establish boundaries between the two. I surround myself with a robust support system, including mentors, advisors, and colleagues. Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and business management. I also use technology tools and software to streamline tasks.

What advice would you give to girls aspiring to enter the healthcare profession?

For young girls aspiring to enter healthcare, pursue your passion. Choose a profession that aligns with your interests and values: medicine, nursing, or pharmacy. Your passion will motivate you and bring you fulfillment. Seek Mentorship: Find mentors in the healthcare field to provide you with guidance. Also, invest in your education and academic qualifications to build a strong foundation and develop strong communication skills.

What are some ways for people to support the practice both locally and from a distance?

People can support the clinic by spreading the word and following us on our social media platforms: Instagram at caringlinknp, Facebook at caringlinknp, and our website at caringlinknp.com. Also, people can support us financially—this is crucial for the clinics to maintain and expand their services.
