Betty White has sadly passed away on the morning of December 31, 2021. Known for her radio show “The Betty White Show” to her roles in TV shows such as “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Golden Girls. We will remember her as a whimsical actress who has brought us much joy on the silver screen. Many will undoubtedly miss Betty White.
As many of us may have known of White, is that she has always been infatuated with animals. Before pursuing her lifelong career in Hollywood, White aspired to be a forest ranger and zookeeper. She even wrote her own book on her experience with animals called Betty and Friends: My Life at the Zoo. White has worked tirelessly outside of acting as an animal rights activist all her life. And she has volunteered as the trustee and chair at the Greater Los Angeles Zoo for over 40 years. White contributed to many other non-profit animal organizations besides her role in helping with the Greater Los Angeles Zoo. These organizations include the American Humane, and Morris Animal Foundation, where she sponsored over 30 animal species’ health studies to improve the health of a wide variety of animals.

Since the news of her passing a few days shy of her 100th birthday, her fans have started a movement in honor of the late Betty White called #bettywhitechallnege. In this challenge, you can donate to your local animal shelters and rescues to be a part of. As of January 22, 2022, the Meta company tweeted that “More than 390,000 people have donated to fundraisers on Facebook and Instagram for the #BettyWhiteChallenge. The Challenge raised $12.7 million for animal shelters and rescues”. The overwhelming amount of support and donations definitely proves that White was a well-loved individual.
During this tough period of the pandemic, it is uplifting to know that communities can band together for a good cause. It is important to remember there is nothing we cannot achieve as a community as long as we work together. And we have Betty White to thank for that.
Betty White has left a legacy not only in the entertainment industry but also brought more attention to her cause to improve the lives of animals and conditions of zoos.
