Yassie is an Award-winning R&B singer that has pushed her music with passion, because of the loss of her mom at a young age to cancer. As a teenager, she had to say goodbye to a mom who supported her daughter and knew at a young age her music was going to be a hit. Yassie drew from her mom’s support; once her mom passed, it encouraged Yassie to keep pushing. Yassie released her single “Prove It”, and it enjoyed charting success. She recently sang the national anthem at a game for the Memphis Grizzlies G League team “The Memphis Hustle”. She has several other games she will sing at soon. Also, she won Best Song Writer at the Black Only Soul Awards 2023.

Yassie stirred a chart-climbing trend with her latest evocative single, “Prove It”, which was played at the event by DJ Neptune and received a great response. The single recently rose to  #110 on the Digital Radio Tracker’s (DRT) Global Top 150 Independent Airplay Chart. This important milestone has established Yassie as an exciting new artist to watch. The single was played on stations in cities across the country (and overseas in the UK), including 100.3 R&B (Raleigh, NC), 93.9 The Dream (Las Vegas), and Choice 107 (Columbia, SC). Dominion Global Radio (Houston, TX) Easy RandB (London, England), Jammin 103.9 (Little Rock, AR), Love 101 (Indianapolis, IN), Magic 93.3 (Denver, CO) Majic 102.3 (Dallas, TX), Pure Sounds Radio (Chicago, IL), Quiet Storm 95.7 (Savannah, GA), and Z102 (Columbus, GA) brings Yassie’s mellifluous voice to new audiences everywhere!

We at ENSPIRE asked Yassie questions about her experiences as a musician and her songwriting methods.

You lost your mother at a young age, but have been able to draw from her support and memory. How helpful was singing and songwriting in your process of coping with that loss?

It was extremely helpful. It allowed me to express my feelings in a creative and healthy way, and others who have gone through something similar can relate so it created a connection of healing between me and my own mental health and a way to connect with my listeners on a more vulnerable level.

Is it surreal for you to know that your music is being played on over a dozen radio stations nationwide?

Yes, I still get this overwhelming feeling of shock but joy that so many people connect with my music, and have listened to it all over the world.

Have you ever had writer’s block while trying to write a song? If so, how did you overcome it?

Yes, I have, and it’s normally caused by stress. To avoid that I am big on meditation, it’s therapeutic and helps keep my mind clear.

What comes first when you’re writing a song? The lyrics or the melody?

Mostly the melody comes first. I’ll hum the melody first and then the words come. Although there have been times when I listened to a beat and the words came immediately.

Do you have a specific song that you are the proudest of?

Yes, my song Prove It. It charted for 8 weeks straight and it’s such a fun and upbeat song.

Are there any other musical artists that you would love to collaborate with someday?

Yes, several. To name a few: Chris Brown, Summer Walker, H.E.R, SZA, and 6lack.

Do you have any upcoming projects that we can be on the lookout for?

Yes, I have a few singles in the works for the summer months. I feel like now I have enough albums so I just want to focus on vibey/catchy singles that get the people ready for the summer vibes. Definitely more visuals, and shows, working on touring so stay tuned.

Prove It is a testament to the power of love, written from the heart. It speaks to the truth that when someone is your soulmate, they will invest their time and energy into proving that fact. Yassie’s artistic endeavors were borne out of tragedy; her mother passed away from bone cancer when Yassie was just 13. Out of that traumatic experience, the songstress was determined to make her work a tribute to her mother’s legacy and encouragement. Today, whenever Yassie performs, records, or releases a new song or album, it’s always with the thought that her mom would be proud of the vibrant, gifted woman Yassie has become. “Prove It” is part of the new EP Care”, which is currently available on all major streaming platforms. The single, which anchors the album, was released in the first quarter of 2022, to great fanbase acclaim. You can watch the official Prove It music video here.
