Snoopy and the Peanuts Gang are back on screen in a brand new feature on Apple TV+. “Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home, Franklin” follows the origin story of Franklin Armstrong, the first Black character in the Peanuts franchise; he was introduced to the Peanuts Gang over 50 years ago. Franklin joined the cast after retired teacher Harriet Glickman wrote a letter to “Peanuts” creator Charles Schulz, asking that he integrate his work after the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. Until now, little was known about his family, origin, or backstory. “Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home, Franklin” explores his life before The Peanuts Gang for the first time.
The cartoon shows Franklin’s introduction to The Peanuts Gang, most notably Charlie Brown. The trailer shows the pair meeting and becoming friends. As the duo become partners trying to win a race together, Franklin shows Charlie Brown his signature dance moves comically asking if he could be related to James Brown. “Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home, Franklin” explores many important themes that follow children throughout their adolescence: the challenges and rewards of making new friends, the importance of family and community, finding confidence in your own unique qualities, and the power of perseverance and teamwork. “Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home, Franklin” is a must-watch for longtime Peanuts fans and newcomers alike.
