Freestyle Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, acquired rights to the documentary GARY K: ONE STEP AT A TIME and gained American video-on-demand rights to the film. Starting on March 8, it will be available to rent/own on all digital HD internet, cable, and satellite platforms worldwide, as well as on DVD through Freestyle Digital Media. Created in a realistic cinema tradition, GARY K: ONE STEP AT A TIME conveys the titular figure’s rise out of addiction to become a nationally renowned recovery advocate, educator, author, and addiction counselor.

Gary, an actor, traveled the globe playing the male leads in many great Broadway musicals until his addictions took everything he had. He lost his starring roles, his career, his family, and almost his life. In the documentary, filmmakers follow Gary for ten years of his odyssey. Over those years, Gary gets sober, resurrects his acting career by touring North America as Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill W. Gary, and survives a near relapse. In the end, he re-dedicates his life in service to addicts and alcoholics on the opioid epidemic’s front lines.

Relocating from New York City to Delay Beach, Florida, Gary battles to save lives as a drug and alcohol counselor. He teaches about the brain disease of addiction and the healing power of 12-Step programs at the epicenter of America’s opioid plague. Through Gary, 12-Step recovery is honestly portrayed onscreen and demonstrates that his daily commitment to save others’ lives keeps him clean and sober, one step at a time.

GARY K: ONE STEP AT A TIME, was directed by Susan Gray and produced by Bestor Cram and Mike Majoros. Also, it won accolades at film festivals throughout North America and has been shown at recovery events in tandem with Gary’s live presentation.

“Gary K.’s struggles to fulfill his pledge of sobriety becomes a reflection of how important purpose and guidance are in leading one on a pathway to stepping forward,” director Susan Gray said.

Indeed, this film represents the humanity of those struggling with addiction and the necessity of education and support to take steps toward recovery.
