Hair care giant Design Essentials isn’t just nourishing scalps – they’re nurturing the future. The Atlanta-based, Black-owned company recently announced a $2 million pledge to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), specifically targeting programs that cultivate the next generation of leaders in the beauty industry.
This impactful commitment is split between two esteemed institutions: Spelman College and Howard University. Spelman, located in Atlanta, will receive $1 million to support the launch of their groundbreaking Cosmetic Science Program. This program will equip future Black chemists with the knowledge and resources to not only understand the science behind hair care products but also to develop solutions that cater directly to the needs of the core consumer they represent.

The remaining $1 million goes to Howard University, alma mater of Design Essentials’ CEO Cornell McBride Jr. Here, the funds will establish The Design Essentials Community Fund. This initiative will empower Howard’s School of Business students with entrepreneurial resources, mentorship, and scholarships. By fostering a culture of business acumen, Design Essentials hopes to see these aspiring leaders flourish and become future industry giants.
This investment in HBCUs goes beyond financial support – it’s a strategic move towards inclusivity and innovation within the beauty industry. By equipping Black students with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed, Design Essentials is paving the way for a future where diverse voices are at the forefront of product development. This pledge signifies a commitment not just to healthy hair, but to a more empowered and representative beauty landscape for all.
