On Monday morning, broadcast journalist Gayle King and global pop star Katy Perry made history with a brief but groundbreaking journey into space aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket — a mission led by Jeff Bezos’ private spaceflight company.

The NS-31 mission marked a powerful milestone: the first all-female crewed spaceflight since 1963. It highlighted both the evolution of space travel and the growing role of women in science and technology.

Launching from Blue Origin’s West Texas facility at 8:30 a.m. local time, the flight lasted just over 10 minutes, soaring approximately 120 miles southeast of El Paso. The crew reached the edge of space before safely returning to Earth in a capsule landing.

Upon touchdown, an emotional King knelt and said, “I would just like to have a moment with the ground,” expressing profound gratitude and awe at the experience.

Leading up to launch, King openly shared her nerves. “I stepped out of my comfort zone in a way that I never thought was possible for me,” she said. But after completing the journey, she reflected with renewed confidence: “Now that I’ve done it, I do feel I can take on anything.”

In the days before liftoff, CBS Mornings ran a special feature titled “Gayle Goes to Space,” offering viewers exclusive behind-the-scenes coverage, including interviews with previous Blue Origin astronauts and live updates from the launch site.

The launch drew a crowd of excited family and friends, including Oprah Winfrey, Kris Jenner, and Khloé Kardashian, all there to support the historic mission.

Joining King and Perry on the flight was Lauren Sánchez, fiancée of Jeff Bezos and a former broadcast journalist herself. While candid about some questions surrounding Bezos’ role in space exploration, Sánchez emphasized the bigger picture: “This is so much bigger than one man and one company. I’ve chosen to separate the two.”

This mission not only underscores the advancement of private space travel but also shines a spotlight on the limitless potential of women in STEM fields. As King, Perry, and their crewmates return to Earth, they carry a powerful message: the sky is no longer the limit.
