From July 3rd to July 6th, amid Independence Day celebrations, another celebration was happening: the ESSENCE Festival of Culture. This is the largest annual celebration of African American culture, and it takes place in New Orleans. Within that was the Essence Food and Wine Festival, which is exactly what it sounds like. At the event was a segment titled Essence Eats, where there was a panel entitled “Celebrating Culinary & Lifestyle Storytelling.”

This panel was moderated by Dani Canada, Managing Editor for Bossip Magazine, and featured culinary personality Tamar Braxton, chef and host Jernard Wells, and lifestyle expert Jazz Smollett, who work with TV One and Cleo TV. Braxton’s program is called “Cooking Sessions with Tamar and Ms. E,” Smollett’s is titled “Living by Design,” and Jernard Wells’ is called “New Soul Kitchen.”

They spoke of their experiences, exploring the value of lifestyle programming, the ability of food and travel as storytelling devices, and the importance of their work in fostering representation both off- and on-camera. They also spoke highly of TV One and Cleo TV in providing them freedom to be who they are. As Braxton described, these networks allow them “to be unapologetically Black.”

TV One and Cleo TV not only recognize the importance of authenticity, but they also strive to engage and pioneer this. If you would like to learn more about TV One, you can go to their website here. If you would like to learn more about Cleo TV, you can go to their website here
