Antonique Smith is a name you might know from the Broadway stage, the silver screen, and your favorite playlist. The Grammy-nominated singer and actress, best known for her starring role as Mimi in Rent, is now the Global Ambassador for Sun Day, a new international movement for clean energy. Launching on September 21, 2025, Sun Day is more than just a celebration of the sun; it’s a worldwide call to action.
Founded by renowned climate author and 350.org co-founder Bill McKibben, this grassroots movement combines climate justice, cultural celebration, and community action to highlight the potential of solar and wind energy. From electric bike parades and solar home tours to clean energy concerts and policy marches, communities worldwide will host a diverse range of events. As a result, they will spotlight the benefits of a cleaner, more hopeful world — with Smith championing their vision.

“As the official Ambassador of Sun Day, I am excited to educate and encourage communities across the Globe to understand the importance of Clean Energy and Solar Power. We all have a responsibility to do our part to fight climate change,” Smith said. Solar energy is cheaper, healthier, and a job creator. In a world full of fear and chaos, Sun Day is about bringing awareness to climate solutions we already have and fighting to get them implemented for the sake of future generations.”
Smith’s passion for activism isn’t new. For over a decade, she’s been a powerful voice for climate and social justice. Moreover, in 2024, she co-founded the nonprofit Climate Revival with climate leader Rev. Lennox Yearwood. The organization works to mobilize communities of color and faith, helping them recognize how climate issues are already impacting their lives.
This year’s Sun Day movement comes at a critical time, with the recent “Big Beautiful Bill” potentially rolling back significant clean energy tax credits in the U.S. These changes could affect millions who rely on the 30% solar installation credit and the $7,500 electric vehicle rebate. As a result, people are in a solar sprint to install clean energy systems and claim these benefits before the deadlines. However, with Antonique at the helm of the Sun Day, some real change and awareness may take place.

“Antonique is a force both artistically and within the climate movement,” Sun Day founder McKibben said. “Not only is she a gifted entertainer, but the way she has been committed to the climate mission to educate and inspire makes her the perfect Ambassador for Sun Day.”
Smith is a celebrated figure in entertainment and is now leveraging her platform as the Global Ambassador for “Sun Day” to champion clean energy and climate justice. Additionally, through this role, she is helping to mobilize communities. Also, Smith is shining a light on accessible solutions like solar and wind energy to combat climate change. Overall, by merging activism with celebration, Smith and the Sun Day movement are inspiring change by reaching as many communities at a time.
