( ENSPIRE Entertainment ) T-Boz Raises Awareness Of Sickle Cell
Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watkins opened up about illness, global fame, defying death, and doubt, and won. The American singer, dancer, and actress, best known as the lead vocalist of the Grammy-winning 1990s R&B/hip-hop girl group TLC, gets personal on TV One’s new episode of “Uncensored.” It aired Thursday, March 12, and featured her extraordinary journey of faith and fight that helped her outlive expectations and reshape music history. At a young age, T-Boz was told she wouldn’t live past 30 due to sickle cell disease. Despite the doubts and hardships, she went on to become part of one of the most legendary girl groups of all time. On this episode of “Uncensored,” T-Boz was unfiltered, touching on loss, the struggles of superstardom, and the faith she carried beyond every limitation.
Sickle cell disease causes red blood cells to stick to the walls of blood vessels, blocking blood flow and preventing oxygen from reaching tissues. Due to a lack of oxygen, it often damages organs and causes severe pain. T-Boz publicly shared her diagnosis in 1996 and forged through belief and resilience that led to an amazing entertainment career that has shaped audiences. Known for her raspy voice, T-Boz drove hits like “Waterfalls” and “No Scrubs,” and continues to perform with bandmate Chilli. A four-time Grammy winner and four-time Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper is also an actress and producer. Beyond music, she is an author of “A Sick Life” and an actress starring in “Belly.”It goes to show destiny isn’t defined by diagnosis.

It’s no surprise when it comes to T-Boz being vulnerable and telling us her journey through adversity. She has, on many occasions, raised awareness about health, especially sickle cell. T-Boz has lived with sickle cell anemia since childhood and frequently shares her experiences to raise awareness. Other examples include her role as a spokesperson for the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America. In addition, she is a national co-chair of Health Care Voter, which educates and advocates for proper healthcare. Not only that, in 2013, T-Boz released “Champion,” with proceeds from the song benefiting children with sickle cell anemia and leukemia. Lastly, she explored holistic health, launching a CBD line to manage pain due to her condition.
