Rhythm and Blues is the alchemist’s most sacred feat. The 21st century has witnessed its very rise and fall, but never its death. R&B has always been at the mercy of evolution, championed by some of the most promising artists of our time. Keturah Cummings, an up-and-coming R&B act from Beaufort, South Carolina – also known as the Princess of R&B – is one to look out for.
Although Keturah began singing at 16 years old and wrote her first song, “Smooth Operator" two years later, the artist’s professional career took flight on the social media app, Clubhouse. After showcasing her music to a room for independent artists, Keturah was discovered by the CEO of Monae Management, Veronica Charnell. At only 22 years old, Cummings has been compared to the likes of Aaliyah, Alicia Keys and H.E.R. Her foremost musical influence is the sound and style of early 2000’s R&B, noting Beyoncé, John Legend and Rihanna as personal inspirations.
Keturah’s music honors the essence of contemporary R&B, while embodying a modernized twist that is seemingly unmatched. Her most popular song to date, “Start Over” features soul-filled lyrics, hypnotic vocals, and a dazzling guitar-driven melody. She recently performed the hit song live on her YouTube channel. Cummings humbly notes her closest friend as the inspiration for “Start Over”. She says, “We all have a friend, or maybe you’re that person, who is stuck in a relationship cycle. I wanted to be there for my friend and I made this as a reminder that, Yo, you’re young. Chill out, love yourself, and start over with someone else. I think the toxic relationship stuff social media glorifies is super played out”. Following in the footsteps of R&B’s most esteemed veterans, Keturah’s motivation is to facilitate healing through her music.
This summer Keturah will release her highly anticipated three-part debut EP., “I Am Keturah”. It will feature four songs that are guaranteed to shake up our quarantine slumber into a full-swinging roar. “There’s going to be Pop, R&B, Smooth R&B, Neo-Soul, etc”.
