The award-winning Broadway musical “MJ” premieres in London in March 2024, as producers Lia Vollack Productions and The Michael Jackson Estate announced Monday. The musical’s first UK performance will be held in the Prince Edward Theatre in London’s West End. Tickets will be available in the Spring of 2023 on the musical’s website. You can sign up for the musical’s newsletter at this link to be notified when tickets are available. More booking and casting information will be released at a later date.
“I am thrilled that MJ will come to London, having been embraced by New York audiences since it opened,” says Christopher Wheeldon, the show’s director, and choreographer. “After many years working with the Royal Ballet and bringing the Tony Award-winning American In Paris to the West End, I now very much look forward to bringing MJ to UK audiences.”
The London show comes as yet another delight to fans of the show after “MJ” recently released exclusive videos and behind-the-scenes content for fans on TikTok. Besides that, they also announced earlier this year that the musical would start a North American tour in August 2023. So far dates for the North American tour have been announced in the cities of Chicago, IL, and Charlotte, NC.
“MJ” has already found massive success in the United States. According to the latest press release, “the Broadway production of MJ has shattered the house record at the Neil Simon Theatre for the 7th time, grossing $1.78 million.” The show and cast have won multiple tony awards, including those for “Best Choreography,” “Best Sound Design Of A Musical,” and “Best Performance By An Actor In A Leading Role In A Musical.”
The show follows Michael Jackson during the creation of his 1992 Dangerous World Tour. The show aims to capture the iconic style and signature of Michael Jackson while still providing audiences with a unique look at the famous performer’s creative process.
As mentioned before, the show is directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, who was behind the show’s tony award for choreography. He co-created the show with two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author Lynn Nottage. The creative team has many other Tony Award-winning members, including Derek McLane, Natasha Katz, and Jason Michael Webb.
“As a Black musician and a pioneering voice in the music industry, Michael Jackson demanded inclusion, broke incredible barriers, and in the process made indelible music that continues to resonate, delight, and move listeners today,” says Lynn Nottage. “I am drawn to his complicated, singular, and uncompromising creative process, and to understand where, why, and how he made his music.”
