Netflix is a veteran in the Romantic Comedy genre of film, creating hit films like To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before and Purple Hearts. The film comes out right in time for the Valentine’s Day season ahead. “You People” is the directorial debut of Kenya Barris known for writing, ABC’s Black-ish and Grown-ish, and the films like Girls Trip and Shaft. This modern love story tells a tale that many can relate to.
The film centers around a millennial couple that meets on a chance encounter. When Ezra (Jonah Hill) accidentally hops into the wrong car thinking it was his Uber he meets his future girlfriend (Lauren London). It starts as a refreshing twist on dating and relationships in 2023. These days folks are meeting on apps more so than unexpected circumstances. Watching two individuals meet in an uncomfortable situation keeps you intrigued about how it will even work out.
After, they met again so Ezra could properly apologize. They ended up hitting it off. Imagine that, meeting someone by accident and not-so-pleasant encounter, and now you are interested in each other.
Both come from different backgrounds and have families with different opinions. Their relationship gets the ultimate test when they realize they want to take things to the next level, marriage.
With the couple never meeting each other parents they know what their first step is. With the rocky road ahead, they embark on a journey that only real love can make it through.
The film drops on Netflix Friday, January 27.
